Here's a movie where Redford's great looks, charm, and likeable screen presence are crucial to the film's message about the sale-ability and telegenic necessity of candidates, as well as a commentary about the ways in which belief systems are tested, compromised, shaped, challenged, and abandoned in pursuit of power and victory. technically not about a presidential run, but an essential work on the themes and elements that govern presidential politics that is still relevant today. Plus, Peter Boyle is in it -- always a plus -- and the excellent actor who plays the Republican incumbent is deliciously condescending to his young challenger. Seriously superb viewing.
