BATACAZOS

Comments on Miss Venezuela

Normally, I do this pretty early each year, but since I had the loading problems everyone else had with this board, I had to wait about a week and a half until I could reach the message box. I actually wrote this review quite a while ago but have updated parts of it to reflect the surprises of tonight (Group I). Here's part one of two:

This has been a difficult year for Miss Venezuela. Although it is not taken for granted that that pageant is being held against enormous odds, the advent of popular voting-in Miss World, NB Mexico, etc.-as a means to cut contestants has its downsides. There is definitely room for discontent with the policy for several reasons: the first being that even though the individual groups of 8 are chosen randomly, it is always possible for girls to make it who shouldn't have (and vice-versa) due to luck; less of an issue this year with such a well-balanced group but still a big downside. Secondly, state sashes actually begin to matter. Although this is the most representative class in the history of Miss Venezuela, with 80% of candidates coming from outside of the capital, popular voting renders those girls with sashes like Distrito Capital all the more powerful. It is hard to imagine, on the other hand, people rallying to vote for regions like Roraima and Dependencias Federales, which are sparsely populated as is. Granted, Miss Canaima just made it through in the first round, but it's still an issue.
The third is sentimental: the principle of "En una noche tan linda como esta..." is taken very seriously in Venezuela. Many people, including myself, would like to say that every state and every girl has a right to be able to live that final night. The title of Miss Venezuela is conferred by a jury, whose decisions are not subject to popular appraisal. Somehow, that magic and that mystery is tarnished a notch by having the cut be decided by the public. I do have to agree with the people who say that these girls train for up to two or three years to get their sash, and there is something unfair about being sent home before the pageant. Every year, there are at least a handful of girls whom everyone knows will not win; that's how it works in every pageant in the world. But they can at least go home having memories of an incredible night before their entire country (and some three dozen others!). Having it end knowing that you are at the bottom of the public's vote is harsher than simply standing with 15 other girls after the jury's decision is read out.
On the plus side, the public is engaged for a month leading up to the contest, and it's one more step to "modernizing" the pageant for better or for worse. It is worthy, however, to remember that the hard work the candidates put themselves through is not truly represented by this new system, and hopefully when the pageant is back on its feet the popular vote will go or at least be minimized (a good way would be, as one designer suggested, cutting down to the final 26 through vote, or simply guaranteeing the most popular girl one spot in the finals).

It must be said that this year's group of girls all look spectacular in their official photographs. Many of them, who did not shine in their "candid" pictures, made vast improvements under Daniel Alonso's lens, which has really captured the best angles of most of the candidates. Despite the hasty preparation for this year's candidates-due to the cut down budget, the last minute alterations to the list and the postponement of the pageant-this is the best year to showcase the touch of the Miss Venezuela Organization. Every girl has improved vastly since her preliminary selection. Interestingly, TWO of them are completely intact, with no cosmetic alteration, and others-some of whom have been hailed for their "natural" appearance-have had quite a few operations.

Igor Molina, head of the OMV press office, has repeatedly said that this year's batch of girls was spectacular and he is well justified in that claim. For their part, Osmel Sousa, Giselle Reyes and Maria Callay, the three big supervisors of the pageant, are apparently pleased with the quality of the class but see more work to be done on many of them. There were so many stunning candidates cut in the early rounds (Marianne Puglia, Stellamaris Conde, Tatiana Guerra, Pilar Moraga, the entire class of Miss Zulia 2003) that the "mystery" arrivals had to be good, and they are! Overall, the candidates have extremely good figures; although there was some talk that "all the girls are attractive, but few make an impact," the competition this year is very even. Every girl has something unique she brings to the table, which is more of a tragedy because we will only see half of the 32 girls actually compete. Even though every year the line is repeated that "any of the girls can win," this class is a real example of the concept. Of course, there are some big front runners, but it seems that everyone is at least a dark-horse with a shot at pulling off a victory as surprising as Mariangel's. Due to that fact and also the introduction of public voting, very few commentators have been willing to guess the exact final results. Osmel himself has five favorites but won't divulge their
names. Speculation has ARAGUA and TACHIRA in that group.

This year's pageant will likely have the most international titleholders of any contest in world history: one out of every three girls has won some kind of pageant from Miss Caribbean International to Miss Italy in the World and Miss Globe. Height-wise, this is probably the best year since 1999 with half a dozen girls meeting or beating the 1.80 mark. Although there are no "recycled" misses, several have tried before and been eliminated-Ivana Lo Monaco (CANAIMA), Pamela Djalil (SUCRE), Francys Barraza (TRUJILLO), Julimar Queipo (PSLA. GOAJIRA), Karla De Abreu (CARABOBO). Because the quality is so even, probability dictates that even a surprise winner in this year will be worthy of international competition. It is not impossible to envision a Miss Universe, a Miss World, and a Miss International coming out of this class. Although any call at this point is extremely premature, at this moment the leaders look like ARAGUA, LARA, MONAGAS, MIRANDA and NUEVA ESPARTA. DEPENDENCIAS FEDERALES has taken a big crash tonight but can still recover.

***** -- The front runners.
**** -- Will fight for the crown, as GB terms it!
*** -- Dark horse.
*-** -- Longer shot.

AMAZONAS: Rossy Rincón Rodriguez ***
Without even placing into the semifinals of Miss Costa Oriental, Rossy made it all the way to the title of Miss Amazonas, and is now a sudden favorite for the title. The reason: her stunning eyes and their contrast with her perfect complexion. Although she photographs on extremes (good and bad), Rossy was a big press attraction at her first official appearance, and it was clear that her runway skills were what earned her Osmel's eye. A very exotic beauty by GB standards but can launch a surprise.

ANZOATEGUI: Maria Fernanda Tondolo Paz ***
The fifth Miss Anzoategui in the last two years. Maria Fernanda is the tallest girl in the competition along with Marinely Rivas, but has been taking a bit of the brunt from Carla Batista's many supporters. She is very much playing up the "young" look but there is room to mature between now and the end. She represents Jacqueline Aguilera's institute in this contest and thus carries with her a good advantage.

ARAGUA: Aura Avila Serrano *****
Technically, there has only been one back-to-back win in the history of Miss Venezuela (not counting two Zulians winning Miss Mundo Venezuela in 2000 and 2001), but Aura Avila has all it takes to break that record. She was stunning at Miss Aragua and the prep work she has received in Caracas has transformed her into Miss Universe material. A front runner for most of the build-up to this week, she needs only work on being a little more "natural" and the rest is clear sailing. No one can watch the competition without keeping one eye on her: she may be the one Mariangel Ruiz crowns a second time.

BOLIVAR: Ana Sanchez Baez ****
As in 2000, Bolivar presents the sole black candidate. Ana, who also has some Indian blood in her, has made a tremendous transformation-from the graceful, "good" girl to the assertive, "sexy" version. Has the striking, unusual beauty that is now being prized on the world stage but not the height. Reminds some of Norkys Batista.

CANAIMA: Ivana Lo Monaco D'Anna ***
Ivana has tried before for the crown but this is her best finish ever. Canaima's first representative since 1992, she has a huge drawback in her bleached hair, which pundits now immediately associate with outdatedness and instant loss on the world stage. Nevertheless, she has rallied strongly in her first round and was the surprise of Group I. Will need to change the hair if she advances but there is potential for a surprise here into the top 10.

CARABOBO: Karla De Abreu De Abreu **
After trying unsuccessfully in 2000 for her state's title, Karla De Abreu finally won it this year. Reactions have been mixed but there is no denying she possesses enough potential to possibly "crash" into the top 10. She can be a dead ringer for Vanessa Carreira, and both women are of Portuguese descent. Carabobo currently holds both the Mr. Venezuela and Miss Mundo Venezuela crowns but it hasn't focused any more attention on Karla.

COJEDES: Alba Arias Acevedo ***
One reporter summed it up perfectly: she has the face of a telenovela actress. Alba Arias also has a perhaps over-built figure working against her, but while she does not seem to be the full package for international competition, she will certainly be popular with the public, who may very well vote her into the semifinals.

COSTA ORIENTAL: Eleidy Aparicio Serrano **
Very bold features and very energetic. Although Eleidy was the first delegate to be chosen for Miss Venezuela and a great personality, it looks hard for her to pass further on the road.

DELTA AMACURO: Eglee Cañizalez ***
The last-minute replacement for Andreina Angeli, Eglee has enough potential to make things interesting in Group IV. She has very defined features which would be at home in NB Mexico. Striking eyes and her last minute "preparation" was well-executed. Could go either way.

DEPENDENCIAS FEDERALES: Paola Cipriani Huszczo ***
With her combined Italian and Polish ancestry, Paola Cipriani has been compared to a bevy of former misses. She is undeniably sexy and striking. Before entering Group II she would have been a shoo-in for the top 5 but had a terrible fall. It's now up to the public to decide; she clearly has international potential but on her performance alone she could be cut entirely from the end. If she can get a "free ride" from the public and look as good in person as she does in her photographs, Venezuela will have its first real "model" type representative.

DISTRITO CAPITAL: Mercedes Pulido Silva ****
Her eyebrows are what draws everyone's attention, but they are either part of the good or the bad depending on who you ask. Mercedes Pulido looks fair game to make it into the semifinals but running further will remain in question for her. She is a very complete package but the competition is so stiff this year. Nevertheless, she is a very striking and unique candidate for Venezuela.

FALCON: Leonella Bracho Coll ***
People don't seem to know what to make of Miss Falcon this year. A tall young lady whose beauty seems to be pretty divisive, Leonella nevertheless has a very good chance of going into the final 16. Her features are completely unique in the history of the pageant: a small, delicate face; large, flat lips; piles of black hair and an unusual wide jaw structure which make her stand out for better or for worse. There are comments that she seems "overdone" and "old-school" but she does bring in a dramatically new face to the pageant. Did very well in Group II and on the basis of question-answers, should make it.

LARA: Ana Karina Anez Delgado *****
At Miss Centroccidental, Ana Karina came out of nowhere and became the most imposing representative of Lara state since Soraya Villareal in 1995. The first of the two Ana Karinas, Miss Lara could very well be the "dark horse" that comes off with the crown. She has amazing features and like so many others this year, nears 6". The only thing she needs is time. Ana Karina gained a lot of steam after the press presentation and if it continues, she will have a full-on insurgency. Now that she has made it into the final 16, she could storm the competition. More and more members of the media in particular seem to be noticing her in the corners of their eyes.

MERIDA: Ana Karina Ramirez Vallenilla **
For a long time, Ana Karina was the tallest girl heading into the competition and thought to be potentially devastating come finals night. She reminds many of Martina Thorogood but there is just something missing. It was actually a huge surprise that Ana Karina pulled far ahead of Marinely Rivas and made it into the 16. There does seem room for her to pull a surprise again but her potential is currently unrealized.

MIRANDA: Valentina Patruno Macero ****
Valentina is yet another to compete in both Miss Italy in the World and Miss Venezuela. The highest-profile candidate this year, Valentina will try to avoid memories of Barbara Clara, another Miss I.n.M. who failed to make the cut. On her new "home turf," Valentina possesses the prestige of her title, her striking dark features, a legion of fans, and like Melissa Wolf before her, her perfect English (though her Italian is more questionable!). The public loves her so much that she was the undeniable leader for Group I but come finals night it's a new playing field.
As has been noted everywhere, Valentina's biggest drawback is height. She is the shortest girl in the competition and although another Antonella Baricelli broke that pattern in 1999, it remains to be seen whether Valentina can go all the way to be the next Miss Venezuela; she is certain to make the final 10. There is every reason, however, to believe that Valentina may blow the competition out of the water if she pulls out as much of the stage presence and magnetism she's used before. At the very least, a big contender for the Miss Photogenic award!
