| Posted By: Ahmed Sharif Shuvo Posted On: Aug 24, 2003 Views: 698 | Thought for the 2nd Test Congratulations to Dev Whatmore, khaled Mahmood, Habibul Bashar, Rajin Saleh, Hannan Sarker, Mashrafee, Rafique, Alok and last but not least the ever dependable Khaled Mashud- for not leting us down and showing a tremendous fighting spirit. Here are some thoughts for the 2nd test: We are very disappointed by the form of Kaled Mahmood. How ever, it can be counter productive for the team spirit to drop him in the middle of series (Although I believe Khaled Mashud was the best captain we ever had, the process by which he replaced Naimur was unprofessional). So, that leave us to accomodate Manjurul at the expense of a batesman, Javed Omar. It may sound unorthodox idea. Who is going to open and what is going to happen to the batting strength. I feel it is fair for Javed to give him a chance to recover his form before coming back to the team again (I am sure when re recovers his form he will come back again). With current form Javed is only a slightly better batesman than Manjurul. Ashraful could be brought back to open with Hannan. In that case Sanwar may become the sacrificial lamb. I acknowledge Dev's confidence in him as an allrounder. But at the moment I see no difference in worth between Ashraful and Sanwar, and Ashraful was under utilised as a bowler during the Australian tour- possible for giving room for the captain to try and get his elusive 2nd test wicket. With current form the only advantage Ashraful has over Sanwar, is that he could open the innings and can be no worst than Javed in opening the innings. That will allow us to have better variation in our bowling attack. Let us not forget it is the bowlers who wins a test for the team (they have to get 20 wicket to win a match). There should be a specialist spiner as a back up should Rafique becomes injured. We should call back Enamul or Naimur as a stand by. I know Enamul is aging (by our standard), he is no older than Pat Symcox (when he was performing well). Look at Bricknell (England) who was called after 10 years to play and broke the spine of South African bating. Age should not be a bar to pay, instead the only parameter to qualify should be performance and maturity on the field. Enamul, Naimur, Aminul, Javed, Opee, Shahriyar Hossain, Al Shahriyar, Khaled Mahmood - should all be told that they are still in the running for a place if they can perform well in the upcoming domestic season. Let us be fair for every body. |
