They will most likely get a high draft pick this year also, so they will have a shot at guys like Kessel, Toews and Frolik.[/quote] I completely agree. They even have that Malone guy who could mature into a better player. Mix that with some of the veteran firepower they have (Palffy) and they can mature into a great team. It's going to come down to their defense. They have the goaltending, the forwards will develop into a force, but the defense is struggling. |

With the exception of Thornton, whose team made the playoffs the following year after he was drafted, all of them were handicapped from being on crappy teams. Nash is still on a crappy team. Kovalchuk and Heatley never even came close to making the playoffs in Atlanta. Lecavalier and Richards suffered years and years as the only talents in Tampa. | Posted By: Shortmemory Posted On: Dec 30, 2005 Views: 1774 | Team Shortcomings You act like when Lemieux and Gretzky first started with their respective teams that they both fit nicely on offensive juggernauts. If Pittsburgh can keep Fleury, Crosby and Malkin together for 6-8 years they are going to be a pretty tough customer. Ovechkin though looks like a seasoned vet out there already and he's only 20 - a couple pieces fall right there and they are going to be stacked as well. It takes quite a while for teams to develop, Mario didn't win until the early 90's and Gretz was in his fifth year when they finally put it all together - don't start counting these guys out cause their current teams suck - they won't in a couple of years. |
| Posted By: tom Posted On: Dec 29, 2005 Views: 1311 | Crosby vs Ovechkin The 3 young studs (if you include M. Fleury), are all handicapped by the pitiful teams that they play for... I think that Sid the Kid shows Gretzky-like natural gifts...vision, passing, poise, etc, that don't come along every day.....will he be the next Great One?? Well, unless he gets traded to Ottawa or Calgary, we may never know. |

| Posted By: Bubba Posted On: Dec 29, 2005 Views: 1260 | Svatos Yeah you guys, Svatos isn't even part of this question, so stop including him. |
| Posted By: Your Momma Posted On: Dec 28, 2005 Views: 1297 | I agree with "I know the facts" You guys have to read the question. It makes no mention of Svatos in the poll. Argue all you want for him, but you should probably hold those arguments until it asks which guy taken in the 7th round will have a better career. Svatos is good, he just shouldn't be brought into this conversation. |
| Posted By: aegis Posted On: Dec 28, 2005 Views: 1299 | everyone forgets svatos svatos is on the third line for the avs and gets probably gets half the ice time that crosby and especially overcheckin get but is line 3 points behind overcheckin or something like that. why does every1 forget about svatos. im not comparing him to gretsky but if he got more ice time hed be way past overcheckin |

| Posted By: Dashboardy101 Posted On: Dec 28, 2005 Views: 1348 | Insulting Gretzky? First of all, to the dude that called Gretz a whiner, that's cool... I suppose the all time leader in points, assists, goals, among what, 60 other records, deserves to be a whiner. I love how people sit at their computers and say this and that about the best hockey players in the world - pretty sure nobody here has earned that right. I would be very surprised if anybody ever had the talent or skill of Gretz; the closest one was Mario, and he's gettin old... he may have come close to Gretz if his career wasn't surrounded by injuries and sickness, but I digress. Neither Ovechkin nor Crosby will be as good as Gretzky - and I think at this early point in their careers it's hard to compare them to each other, as well as the rest. I would speculate they'll both be higher scorers than Thornton, or Kovalchuk... and right now Ovechkin is on a team with virtually no talent and he's beating Crosby in points, so I'd say he probably has the most potential. time will tell |
