Everytime you buy an item made in China you are contribuing to their eventual takeover of our country and the stagnation of our economy.

RE: Yay Capitolism!!!

There used to be this awesome Hardware Store in my neighborhood. If you needed to fix something, you could just walk in and they had this counter full of smart guys, and you tell one of them your problem. They'd know just what to tell you - take you to the part of the store that had what you needed, and then explain how to fix what you needed. They were always dead-on right with their advice. It was a joy to shop their.

Then HomeDepot came to town. My brother - a professional handy-man - needed a specific part for a project he was doing. He went to home depot and the morons their couldn't figure out what he needed. So he went to this neighborhood hardware store and was in and out in 5 minutes - they had the part, knew what he was talking about, and set him right up.

Well, that great hardware store is gone - put out of business by home depot. Maybe the prices were so low that they couldn't compete. I'll take high prices and smart, friendly service over cheap incompetance any day.

THAT is why I hate wal*mart. Nevermind that the store is chaotic and makes me dizzy just to walk the aisles. It's a headache to shop in the store, but worse than that - their aggressive pricing strategy forces better stores out of business. They just can't compete with the prices. Wal*Mart lowers their prices so low that they make no profit or even take a loss, just so they can drive out competition. Then, when there's no more competition, the prices come up. They also use very aggressive and unfair tactics with their suppliers - forcing them to lower wages of the already underpaid factory workers.

In short - Wal*Mart makes the world a worse place to live, just so you can save a couple bucks.

RE: Yay Capitolism!!!

its business, and they are allowed...those hardware owners shouldve been able to pull through with such smart workers and every part available...sounds like the locals shouldve been more loyal....didnt shop at your own local store because YOU were greedy and wanted to save a couple bucks...what were u doing prior to home depot? why couldnt u keep doing the same...ppl are stupid...and by ppl i mean all of us

i agree with your wal mart comment...its a fucken circus in there and you got every mung, asian, and mongoloids (employees) in the world inside running amok...i had to go there for white T shirts (for those things, wal mart just makes sense) i wasnt gonna pay 15 for 3 at Kohls when i could pay 8 for 5 of the same shirts.
(you see, we all do it)

I think the government should step in to create some sort of division for fair business practices - I don't know exactly how but it's impossible for local businesses to compete because you can't expect consumers to care. It's like some superior invasive species wiping out an ecosystem - there should be a way even the playing field at different levels to preserve some sort of integrity.

I know what you mean about the family-owned stores. I try to support them any time I can. Small businesses are better for the economy, the people are more helpful and it feels good to put money in their pockets rather than the infinitely deep pockets of the corporations.

I must admit, though, that I have to run to Walmart on occasion because it's convenient and there just aren't that many small businesses in existance anymore. It sucks!

I managed pet stores for 6 years and I can't even walk down the fish aisle at the Walmart because all of the fish are sick and dying. Those guys are totally ignorant! I had so many people telling me how much they appreciated the knowledge and genuine concern at the pet stores I worked at. It's nearly impossible to find that kind of service (or those businesses) anymore...

Right...because the government has shown how good it is at regulating things and making things better/easier for everyone. Maybe they will put whoever redesigned the running of my local DMV. I like how they took what used to be a 15 minute wait and streamlined it into a two hour ordeal.

"create some sort of division for fair business practices"

The Better Business Bureau does more than just investigate a wrongful termination or sexual harassment.

The BBB doesn't actually do anything. You can file complaints and they will investigate them. If they find the company at fault they will put that in their record and anyone checking on that company will see the list of complaints and I believe an overall rating. If a company doesn't care about their BBB record, there is nothing the BBB can do to them.
