Now where's the league 1 yr later

Well... here we stand. Still indoors and still pushing through. We've lost some teams... teams that have played for a very long time. Experienced teams... mainstay teams. Now we are down to what number 5? 6? from 11. Look at realism people. We are not increasing the league or expanding. Our poll says just under half of the players would NOT want to play outdoors and more than half do. Well... I think we just lost the 60% that do. My prediction is that without some intervention we'll be down to 4 teams next year. Happy broomballing to those left playing!

Don Charry signing off for good :-)

Outdoor/Indoor

MIXED broomball started outdoors and only went indoors during the past few years. What you maybe thinking of is MENS broomball.....

Indoors

You say to ask the oldtimers of the league.
But wasnt this league started indoors? corporate sponsors? Thunder Bay teams on the WORLD scale?
Ive talked with a few who played back in the day...ive heard from the majority that the league dwindled and started its fall when they went outdoors......Sponsors left, players quit and the league entered the state it was in and has been in for the last how many years.
Al Timko, Cliff Lundberg, Jerry Lidemark, Ricky.....lets hear your opinions openly, for all to hear/read....not just behind closed doors or in one to one convo.
Cliff.....you were around, youve been involved, you seen the fall.......tell us your insights! We all should hear them and consider everything without fear of being scrutinized by others $H!T heads in the league who just want to cause a ruckus.
What we should look into ir bringing Broomball back into the cities eyes. get LEAGUE sponors, get TEAM sponsors. Yes we've been trying, but really what trying have we done if Molson donates PRIZES for a social or the end of year. I mean...yea its a start....but wheres that now?
Bring Thunder Bay Broom back tgo the world scale and back to the days of old.

Vote for both outdoor and indoor

Well fans... although indoor CAN bring out the fans more, this year doesn't show that. Except for the past 2 weeks, there has been very little fans.... those late night games were a killer for players never mind fans.
For those who don't really know but think the league has expanded... sorry there, I believe your wrong. The league is the same size now as it was outdoor.
As for the number of games... we did play MORE or at least the same games outdoor in a shorter season. Of course, less face it, the cost was cheaper.
Outdoor - For those who don't know OR can't remember, the game times were VERY reasonable. 7:00, 8:00, 9:00 games during the week and Sun afternoons... those with children COULD bring their famileis to watch or get babysitter very easily. Not with the times we are not faced with.
So.... what does the league want???? What's the focus of the league???? I'll tell you now, when we played outdoors, the teams sure got to know each other by face and name --- more than today. The games were alot more like REC playing than the step up competitiveness there is today. Don't get me wrong, there still were players/teams that were competitive BUT I'd have to say indoors there is more injuries/bruises due to the step up competitiveness there is now - interestingly - with the ice surface at least twice the size. OR maybe it has to do with the men's and ladies scoring challenge... something that was not done outdoors... and if it was done, it wasn't broadcasted on a web site.
Do you, the players want to continue playing late nights, maybe once per week and extending your season so you can play indoors? ASK the boot hockey league - there loving it outdoors! For those who think getting any ice time because boot hockey has the ice.... until the question is truely answered, don't hypothisize on something you don't know about - there's no point - your just trying to add a factor that maybe untrue.
So.... bottom line... what do the players of the league want??? I'd first ask the old timer teams... they the mainstay of the league...
Personally a good mix of outdoor and indoor might work out well - change the ice surface up and allow teams to play more frequently - as well as bring the social aspect of the league back...or do we care to socialize?
I myself shovellled the rink a few days in my time... so what... no big deal... and as for the temperatures .... if you were cold, you were not playing the game with everything you had...those who played the game were rarely cold. We all dresssed properly for it.
Mix it up, indoor ice for Oct/Nov/Dec ... start outdoor ice between Christmas and New Years... everybody gets 2 games per week for Jan-Mar (mixing it up between indoor and outdoor) and back to indoor for playoffs..... Comprise......you never know, you might like it!! It couldn't hurt to try soemthing to get the league back to the way it was...
I realise the executive has had there hands tied to end the season for various reasons but, we really need to pitch in to change that for next year ... ALL of us... we should never have to cancel memorial tournaments, all star games etc.... lets bring back the fun tournament... Let's get the league back to some fun period.... we are still not making a million dollars playing in it!!!

Don Charry signing off... see you at the playoffs!

Vote for Indoor

The indoor has generated more interest, more teams than the outdoor league. Perhaps if the league could get some sponsorship (e.g. Molson's, Labatts, other corporation) this could reduce the cost. The only two drawbacks with indoor is cost and playing once a week. If the league can get sponsorship to pay for a portion of the ice time this would ease the cost.

Indoor Ice

I vote to stay indoor.
If you look, we've had more expansion id the years we've been indoors compared to the years outdoor. I believe that it was when the league went outdoor in the past that intrest was lost.
Yes we had problems with the ice....FWFN was a pain in the ass and we know not to make THAT mistake again.
And Cliff at the TC says there is no problem with icetime as long as we BOOK IT.
Keep in mind that yes, the TBMHA does have first shot at the ice....hockey is MUCH MUCH bigger then broomball in this town. and yes, we do sacrifice earlier times to play indoors but i dont see that as a problem.
What should happen should be a vote on the best times and days to play our game during the season and keep the league indoors where interest in our sport is growing and we can get back to the league that once was.

Stay Inside

I have to say that I don't miss playing in 50 below weather or having to shovel off the rink before playing. We also don't have the rink anymore because the boot hockey league has use of it. I kind of like the fact that people actually don't mind watching broomball because they don't have to freeze their butts off.

OUTDOOR ICE

YES, LETS GO BACK OUTDOORS. THE LEAGUE WAS BETTER, THE COST IS LESS AND WE CAN PLAY MORE THAN ONCE A WEEK, WITH GAMES PLAYED AT REASONABLE TIMES.
