Posted By: Sandra Posted On: Aug 6, 2009 Views: 2568	About highland parks apperence I was born and raised in highland park, born at highland park general hospital, lived on several streets in highland park such as east grand, midland, candler three different houses on candler. I had a great time when i was young living in highland park. but when i went to highland park a few months ago and wanted to visit my old school midland on midland street. i was devastated and could not belive my eyes that the youths of this soceity have gang graffiti all over the school as well as businesses. But my parents moved out of highland park when i was 9 years old. I still stroll through highland park every 2 to 4 years since i left with my family. I remember when i was young they had lots for us as kids to do, highland park had community the pool trucks as well as the community center fun nights aspecialy for halloween partys and such. but now their is nothing for the young youths to do but splater graffiti all over. thats pretty sad that the place i grew up in is now a dead zone.

The years of incompetency and pure laziness in the department is the problem. The office staff of temps were brought in because their was no competent staff available to handle the postions...as you know it was tried with one of your highland park water staff and she could not handle the job...therefore competent staff was brought in. Be assured no one wants the director's job...by the looks of your department no one wants the jobs they have.

We have been on a downward spiral for at least 20 years. Why do you think that Mr. Blackwell can fix this in one year? He needs time and support from us. He is a Highland Parker, born and raised in this city. He experiences as a youth serves as motivation to help our community. Mrs. Pearson had no such connection, but she did make a lot of money. Yes, our city does need to be cleaned up. However, it is not the cities fault if your neighbor doesn't cut their grass. Thats where a strong block club steps in. Yes, a lot of vacant buldings, however, that did not happen overnight. It will take time and funds to demolish these structures. Highland Park Public Schools, which Mr. Blackwell does not control, owns about 6 large school buildings that are vacant. All I'm saying is that it will take time.

The press were not very kind either, nor were the State Republicans. In the light of all these odds, I'm curious how the Highland Park citizenry feel he is handling the city's difficult financial issues.
