Posted By: Carl Kibler Posted On: Mar 30, 2006 Views: 5243 | 51 is the better, 800 is good too My first Parker 51 was given to me by my father just a couple of months before he died. It is an aerometric 51 Special he originally purchased in 1953 or so according to Dad. It wrote okay after sitting unused for decades, but I sent it out for a good cleaning and nib adjustment and now it is one of the smoothest writing pens I have ever owned. I carry it with me everywhere and use it daily. It might be partly from sentimental reasons, but they sold 20 million of them over a long model run from WWII to 1972. Long live the Parker 51. |
Posted By: RuaidhrĂ Murphy Posted On: Mar 27, 2006 Views: 5471 | 51 I can't understand why the 51 is in at all. The Tournament should really be about the best 'other pen' - and yes, I love my 800 but NOTHING beats a 51. |

Posted By: Jim Strutton Posted On: Mar 26, 2006 Views: 1271 | P51 - Pel800 Parker "51" everytime. I have had my original since 1962 and have bought several more since. I always have a fine and a medium nibbed "51" inked on a daily basis, the perfect combination - for me. The 800 is a very nice pen, but I just don't get it? The best argument for the "51" was put by Richard Binder on FPN "The purpose of the "51" is to make sure you understand why the mint-condition Pen XYZ you bought really isn't as good a pen as it could be, which is the justification for going out and buying another pen in a never-ending quest to find the perfect pen to dethrone the "51". This, it should be understood, will not happen in your lifetime, but that's no reason you should give up buying pens." Richard Binder Mar 25 2006, 03:35 AM |
Posted By: Johan Posted On: Mar 26, 2006 Views: 1085 | P51 versus M800 Come on ... the 51 is a very nice pen from an engineering standpoint, but the 800 is THE PEN. It's beautiful, comfortable, equipped with a large choice of great nibs and is a piston filler (which is easier than having to press an aluminium ribbon). The 800 is the pens for me! |
Posted By: Bill Wright Posted On: Mar 26, 2006 Views: 1034 | The final 2 I was kinda surprised the the Pel made it. Thought this was gonna be a Snork/P51 showdown. Oh well... P51 is the DA PEN. Of all the pens that will NOT be culled when I break up the collection, the 51s are the ones that will stay. Period. |
Posted By: Terry Clark Posted On: Mar 26, 2006 Views: 1045 | 51 vs. 800 The 51 all the way! Best pen ever made. Probably have 2 dozen. Had three 800's because people praised it so. Don't understand it at all. Uncomfortable to use (for me) and no design at all (until you get the LE's). The 51 is sleek, sexy, and a darn good pen for hours of writing. Good contest! |
Posted By: Ron Meloche Posted On: Mar 26, 2006 Views: 1029 | 51 verses 800 Ihave many 51s but only one 800. I chose the 800 over the 51 for the following reasons. I love big nibs-Ilike the feel of a traditional section-I like colors and overstatement-I love B and BB I love oblique I realize that 51s have a few of these but other than b nib all of my 51s are 99%fine or extra fine. People sure likesd those fine, extra fine in the bygone eras.Which ever one wins both have earned the cudos of the pen community. Great contest. Ron Meloche |
