The prions which cause the disease are found in much lower quantities in regular muscle tissue as opposed to contaminated tissue from the brain or spinal column. Also, regular cooking doesn't actually do much against prions. So enjoy that filet you just cooked until it was shoe leather, I'll keep ordering mine rare and just skip the cow brain appetizer. |

I read about all that too... although you do have a higher chance of getting it from eating ground beef, I guess the way they shred up the cow, some of the spinal column makes it in to the meat. I think even with all the reports of farmers supposedly not reporting cases of mad cow in the U.S., the chances of getting it are still miniscule... I don't have the exact numbers but of the tens of millions of people eating beef over a 10-15? year period in britain during which BSE was being transmitted to humans, only like 150? or so people contracted the disease... it was some kind of ridiculously small percentage. |
