I prefer to use libraries

One of the great things I love about this country is this great service we have of being able to go into a building, pick up a book from a selection of hundreds and be able to BORROW IT for no charge. Of course it's important to support independent stores but it's also important to support libraries. I don't think I would be writing today without them

Independent Bookshops

If you're struggling to buy from a local independent, Inpress Books is an online bookshop that only sells books from independent publishers. They're funded by the Arts Council and have an excellent selection of writing.

Independent book shops

I used to buy most or all of my books from indepedent book stores - and I would love to do so now, but all my local shops have closed, to be replaced by Asda, Tesco, and charity shops. Even our Waterstone's has gone!

So I use the internet. How I wish I had another choice.

Independent bookshops

As I live in Sweden I find that I often must buy hard-to-get English-language books via the net. But I find it hard to pass an independent bookstore without walking in and coming out with an armload.

I break out in mental hives whenever I walk past any international chain store. Local shops contribute to local well-being through taxes that stay in the region. It is not nostalgia that makes me prefer the local small-scale bookdealer and her/his fellow entrepreneurs. They provide a shopping venue that allows us to exchange personal pleasantries and consumer information while exchanging money. And if you don't think that's important in a society, just look around you.

Independent Bookshop

I live in Madrid, so the only place I can buy cheap secondhand books in English is a tiny international bookshop a few metro stops away, but its great place. One of the few [hopefully] that seems to be in no danger of shutting down!

Independent bookshops

Our local independent bookshop is well supported. However, the owners are retiring soon and have put it up for sale. Fingers crossed.

independent bookstores

I would love to support independent bookstores, but when one opens in this area, it goes out of business soon after. Barnes and Noble, Borders and Hastings, seem to be the only alternatives where I live. (Mountain Northwest US)

independent bookshops

I have recently moved to Ireland where there ae still lots of independent shops and it's wonderful not to be forced into buying from the same place as everyone else in the world. I love the bookshops because the staff are friendly, knowledgeable about the stock and great places to browse. They have stuff you never see in the big chains which is so refreshing.
