horshoe crab? why?

i don't get what's so funny about throwing one at someone...they are completely harmless... they can't pinch or sting or anything like many people think. i took care of them for a few years at a science center and had to handle them daily for visitors to touch.

oh, but i should add-- if you see one on the beach, NEVER pick it up by the tail...not because it will sting you, but because the tail will fall off or get injured. the tail is used as a kind of steering rudder. if it falls off, the horshoe will most likely die from not being able to maneuver around. if you see one stranded on its back, be nice and pick it up by its sides, kind of like a large bowl, and put it back in the ocean. if it's just walking around the beach, you can leave it alone.

I'm glad you are telling people about that.. I see kids doing that at the beach sometimes and it really ****es me off.

It's funny because it's harmless, and horshoe.

RE: horshoe crab? why?

welll, it's not harmless to the horshoe crab :( though i know todd was just kidding...

i'm glad you care vanessa, because horshoe crab populations along the atlantic have been declining 10% in population per year because of habitat loss. the ERDG (Ecological Resource and Development Group)has launched a "just flip 'em" campaign to try to get people to help out with horshoes that are stuck on their backs. they go to the beach to lay their eggs, but sometimes get stuck on their backs, especially if people are around and meddling.

Whose the one counting the crabs? Maybe it just seems like there are less because people aren't trying to get crabs anymore! ha! I know I dont want to get crabs from the beach!

I like to catch them and then flip them on their backs. Then I add boiling water and I have an instant soup, kinda like nature's ramen noodles.
