It's amazing how moronic NHL insiders and hockey analists are when they talk about how the Phoenix Coyotes need to aquire talented players to get a winning team. The reality is that is not the problem at all. The reason they suck so bad is they have been using a revolving door to run countless players through a suicide defensive system. That does not get it dome! This has been continuous since Jim Shoenfeld left shortly after the Coyotes moved to Phoenix. The system went to defense then and it hasn't been changed since. John Tortarella was assistant coach then and should've gotta the job. GM made a bad move and let him go Tampa Bay (and we see what he did there). When Bobby Francis was coaching the Coyotes he went on record saying he wanted to win games 1-0 and 2-1. That's a huge problem in itself. If teams average 25-30 shots on goal per game some of those are going in. Now where does the scoring come from if you are all defense? You can bring in all the Roenicks, Amontes, Tkachuks, etc (stars before and after stay with Coyotes) you want but if their strengths are not going to be utilized then it's counter-productive. Rick Bowness took over because Francis wasn't getting it done. Problem is he continued the same system. Of course it still didn't work so Gretzky came aboard. Mr Goalscorer and Playmaker should have been able to see the issue and turn it around. He didn't. Instead he continued right where Bowness left off. So, what this comes down to is if you want to see winning ways in Phoenix two things must happen. Stop rebuilding the roster during the season (very few are on the team from one season to the next, let alone one game to the next). Learn from the success of Minnesota, Tampa Bay, and Buffalo. Phoenix has had plenty of superstars, but that was ineffective due to the coaching style. These other teams have proven that it takes team chemistry (not individuals) and a stabilized roster. The other change is the coaching staff must understand the object of hockey; Outscore your opponent; not see how many stops you can make. There is so much talent (players actually practice how to score different ways) so use their talent! |

Look at the Maple Leafs. They know they don't have adequete offense so who do they get? Yannick Perrault. All the bias Canadian stations were saying how good a deal that was. Pathetic. Absolutley pathetic. Need offense and get Perrault? No need offense and get a thirty goal winger. The Coyotes need offense so who do they get? Owen Nolan and Jeremy Roenick. Two past-their-prime, old, slow, players who don't provide nearly the offense the team needs. Some General Managers need a good once over. |
