Yes, but who'd be the first senshi?

^,^ When I drew it, it was Seras "In the name of the British crown, I will punish you!"
The other time I saw it, it was Integra "Hellsing Prisim Power"

You and everyone else ;)

Ending the strip with a joke is rather common in most lighthearted comics, where there is a joke in just about every strip, but with a complicated story going on in the background. Take a look at this 17 Januari El Goonish Shive strip for example [link: http://www.egscomics.com/].

As for my absolute favorite part of the 'story', that would be "Cats are people too", since the story went on pretty well like a good sub-story. Your character made for a bit of an annoying ending though, since as a reader of Hellsing it is extremely annoying when the powers Alucard, the lord of the undead are mimicked by some weird OC with no prior explanation.
It is a good idéa to remember that Alucard does not count as "strong vampire" he counts as 'super-insanely-near-omnipotent vampire', and there is only room for one of those in the spotlight, unless the other is cool, mysterious and obviously not a Mary-Sue. The shadowy form of Alucard is basically his most powerful and unique form, so letting it be copied by some copy cat (yes, I do realize that there was an underlying joke there) is pretty annoying.

Anyways, the current storyline is pretty entertaining so far, and I sill can't stop myself from laughing at "nose in the middle of your forehead" as Pip put it :P

Inspiration

Some inspiration for you:

Found that a while back.

You know from my emails I like the idea of a Sailor Moon / Hellsing crossover. Looking forward to it!

Where I'm coming from

You're absolutely right about Naruto. Same with Inuyasha: the lack of development and long stretches of filler really tire me. And I don't want to be like that.

I never thought about Shine in the same terms, though. It's not a drama; it's a comedy. Maybe Monty Python isn't the right analogy to use: it's closer to the comics you read in the newspaper. Nobody expects Foxtrot or Pearls Before Swine to have a kind of over-arching drama. It doesn't tire me when there's no major development at the end of a Non Sequitur story arc.

I would hope people aren't only reading for the Hellsing characters - and, as readership has never been higher than during the R.O.D crossover, it doesn't look like the presence of unfamiliar characters was a turnoff.

Just because I'm explaining myself, though, don't think I trying to invalidate what you've said. I see where you're coming from, and I am giving serious thought to the points you've made.

I would like to give the characters genuine development. One of the obstacles there is the fact that I don't know where the actual series is going, and I don't want to deviate from it too much until I know what I'm deviating from.

I have no intention of stopping the comic without resolving the existing tensions, no matter how much my time gets restricted as I get older.

So there are two things I can promise you: first, that I will start doing serious development as soon as Hellsing proper ends (and there's only one volume left, which even for Hirano won't take forever); and second, that I will not leave the plot unfinished. That's all I can give you for the moment. I sincerely hope it's enough.

It's all a question of opinion

The Scooby Doo jokes were probably funny to some of your readers, I didn't mean that they were horribly done or something. What I did mean however was that they for the build up were not quite enough. When a plot starts to build up people wait for the climax where everything happens and the story ends or gets a powerful push forward. The problem is that your plots build up to the climax and start reaching the end, but just before or in the middle of the climax your stories tend to abruptly end.
As for Monty Python sketches, you have to remember that that the Monty Python sketches were written by sometimes geniusly creative people, but despite this they cannot stretch out for very long without some kind of story.
The sketches usually introduce a few very humorous characters and make a few jokes until the story reaches its climax and then end it with the characters parting or whatever.
When they stick with the same characters for longer than that then it is in most cases an entire movie, complete with an funny and interesting (often slightly ironic) plot.

What you write is about the same characters all the time, but despite this you are still going for one-shots, a small build-up and a few jokes. This is essentially just a filler and as fillers get really old after you've read a few of them. Just take a look at Naruto, they've got professional writers to fill up those (god knows how many) episodes, but the filles still suck, because the writers can't really make the characters stronger, develop them in any way or such, which makes them boring.

Concerning the Read or Die plot: Stretching it out the plot was probably a good choice. The problem here is that almost NO casual reader has read or seen RoD, and has no interest in it whatsoever, which of course made the crossover rather boring to the mentioned people.
The basic idéa was good though, and I would suggest doing something of similar length soon again, but this time with more of a Hellsing theme.
Also as I've said in a mail before, why neglect to develop the characters (Integra, Seras, Pip etc.)?
I've read your reply where you stated that you would have to end the series if you went on with the plot, but seriously, why be so restrictive, just write a plot were everybody doesn't die (or whatever) so you can continue it. Face it, eventually you will get older and have no time to finish the series.

Response to RedMattis

First: It's been a while since I've gotten any good criticism. Thanks!

I won't be replacing Shine with Sailor Hellsing, don't worry. It's a completely separate story. (Actually, you might like it, in that it has an overall plot that drives the action.)

The storylines have been mainly short from the beginning; the comic is more like a series of Monty Python sketches than, say, a comedy movie. (I don't buy that the Scooby-Doo jokes weren't funny at all; a lot of readers enjoyed them.) There's a general understanding that I will get to The Plot of Hellsing proper at some point, but right now I'm more just playing.

On the other hand, the R.O.D crossover was a long dramatic storyline, despite being self-contained. Can I take this as a vote for another one of those?

I'm sorry to tell you that the next couple of storylines will be short, but there's some drama coming up in a few months - and in the meantime, I'm glad to hear the art is keeping you around for the moment ^_^

Oh god no...

Please try to keep the plots around Hellsing.
So far most of the plots change at the drop of a hat and it has really gotten quite annoying. If you're going to joke around then why don't do it with the Hellsing cast? (with possible OCs). Adding Sailor Moon & C:O will just be complete misfits and it will be more annoying to the casual reader than funny.

Stretching out the plots a bit would be a good idéa, since oddly enough your comic (despite updating almost every day) rushes through them all the time. Take the scooby doo plot for example. All it did was throw the gang into the Hellsing mansion to pull of a few jokes which weren't even funny, then with no explanation they were suddenly gone. Not even the poorly written fictions at FanFiction.com are that quick in ending their little sub-plots.
I'm not asking you to stop writing comedy, I'm asking you to take a plot and stick with it for awhile. Even comedies have a (usually very well) written out plot.

Sorry for the flames, but nowdays the only reason that I'm really reading this comic nowdays is for the art.

you're insane. i love it.

I am reminded of the christmas art you drew some time ago of Seras in a seifuku. More specifically, of her telling Integra she would have put her hair in odango. We need to see that.
