less than 15%? I don't get it!

if you pay a waiter 15% of the bill for bringing you food from a kitchen, how do you justify a less than 15% for the guy that drives across town for you? I am sure that the shop pays some compensation or part of the delivery charge but the delivery guy has the added cost of maintaining a car, loss of value due to extra miles, higher risk of being sued or losing car insurabilty if in accident while using the vehicule in a "commercial activity" and so on. I always tip over the standard 20% I give waiters. I never delivered pizzas but have waited tables before, so I am not biased. Just wondering the reasoning behind -/= 15% average of the poll.

side note: the two pizza places I order from always arrive in less than 1/2 hour. They have my address in their computer, maybe they can see you past orders and tips as well. Anybody work at a shop that can answer this one?

RE: less than 15%? I don't get it!

The guy (or gal) just delivered a pizza. He didn't spend the past hour waiting on me; bringing me my drinks, taking my order, making sure I have everything I need for my meal. He drove 4 blocks to bring me a pizza.

i see your point but do not agree, i waited tables and you do not spend an hour with a guest, nice three course meal = 15 minutes 20 tops total time at table (next meal notice the time spent with you). Plus, your section may have 3, 4, 5 tables or more that are being waited on simultanously. the pizza guy may or may not have another pizza in the same neighborhood and therefore would likely spend more time working on your order "behind the scenes" like the same poor langauge skills guy that takes your order sounds like the same poor language skills guy that brings your pizza.

my point is that tips are for good service or convienace, waiter in restaurant get 15%+ and therefore pizza guy should get 15%+. I personally value conveinance over service since time is money and stress, etc. Most people do - since they always say that "this restaurant has good service" if they bring everything quickly and correctly. Unless you are dining at a high end restaurant that is all service usually equates to.

RE: less than 15%? I don't get it!

I work at a pizza delivery place. To answer the question, yes, we have your address in the computer, no, the computer doesn't tell us your past tip. However, drivers remember very well who tips and who doesn't. People who tip get that extra bit of service. (a little extra cheese, get the pizza there as fast as you can, etc.)

Oh, and probably 75% of the time the driver is taking just the one delivery to you...he's not making great money by any means.
