How do you tip?

Let me preface this by saying that I've never tipped in my life. (I come from a country that has banned slave labor). How do you tip a pizza guy. OK, if the Pizza is $14 and I got $15, I can say "Keep the change". Boom, done. Maybe not enough, but something.

But what if I only have a $20 note? Or a $50? I can't say "Keep the change" and still pay the rent. Do you have to tell the guy to round it up to, say $18, or do you have to dig about under the sofa for some small change to give him after he gives you your change.

And do you pay the tip when you pay for the pizza, or do the pay for the pizza, and then give the tip as a separate transaction?

And what if you don't tip him (or her). Do they actually turn hostile and attack?

I know this will seem a strange question to those who have grown up in a tipping society, but for the rest of the world we only know what we see on American sit-coms.

(Before anyone gets all high and mighty about this, I know that most of you Americans don't know how to wrestle a crocodile. Now that's bizarre)

RE: How do you tip?

There's no one right way. It all depends upon the situation.

When you phone in a pizza order, the tell you (or should be telling you) how much it will cost. The easiest way is to have exact change, including the tip, available so you can just say, "Keep the change."

(You can also, using this method, take a little away as the delivery time gets longer, and longer. So if they say an hour, you can start your pile with an extra big tip in case it comes early, and slowly reduce the pile as time passes.)

If you don't have exact change, you still are starting off knowing the total, so you can still do the math ahead of time. When time comes to get change, you can just say, "Just give me two-bucks back." Or, "Keep the coins."

And yes, you can, if you need to, split it into two transactions. I sometimes do this if I'm using a credit card for the pizza. Some places will ask ahead of time (!!!!) if you want to add a tip, while most will just have a place on the reciept you sign for you to indicate a tip.

Splitting it into a seperate transaction is also good if you're going to give an extra big or an extra small tip. It gives you a chance to explain why the tip is so big (so they'll do it again), or so small (so they won't do it again.)

So, what you're saying is - you actually do more work in calculating everything systematically than the pizza dude does!? All he does is drive! You need a degree to work out how much you need to pay him! Stuff that! If they expect more money then they should advertise the pizza as being more expensive....don't just "expect" people to tip, and then spit on their food if they don't.

Jeeee-zussss! I just looked up the US minimum wage. It's only US$5.15 (AU$6.30) per hour. That's slave labor if ever I saw it. For comparison, the Australian minimum wage is US$10.42 (AU$13.47)

How do you survive if you work for the minimum wage and don't get tips? Don't spit on the pizza, spit on your congressman.

RE: How do you tip?

The expectation of a tip is something cultural that goes back many, many generations. You can't change the culture by refusing to tip some poor guy who's trying the best he can to eek-out a living.

Also, regarding the minimum wage... The employer is only responsible for making sure that *after* tips the employee is making at least $5.15/hr. The base wage can be lower, as long as there are enough tips to make-up the gap.

The typical pizza delivery person is a part-timer. They often are students, but sometimes they're people with full-time day jobs that don't pay enough to cover their bills.

If they weren't delivering pizzas, there aren't many other options for them. These are people who are praying that they'll make enough money to pay the rent this month, and some don't make it. Those cars they use to deliver your pizza can turn into their home. And when they can't afford the car, they can't afford to work.

Actually, they could probably make more money holding a cardboard sign at the end of some off-ramp than they can delivering pizza, even with the tips.

It's just too bad that they have to run into scrooges who think that rebelling against tips by stiffing them will change the culture that has an expectation of tips for them.

If you're stiffing the poor pizza delivery guy because you'd like to see an end to tipping, your brain isn't functioning right, and you're devoid of any human compassion. You're just a selfish, anti-social jerk. May you some day find yourself in a situation where you'll need to depend on tips.

Absolutely agreed. And what's more, Congress JUST voted against a bill to raise the minimum wage a buck or so. They did raise their own wage, though...
I hate this country, want to move out of it some time.

i have seen studies showing panhandlers can make $20 an hour easily in Las Vegas.

also, i am a selfish antisocial jerk and i still tip well. i have lots of cash so not likely i will ever need tips.

RE: RE: How do you tip?

The tip begins at $3. For orders greater than $20, the tip is 15% of the bill.

There are 3 basic ways to tip.

1. Cash. Pay the driver with an amount that exceeds the bill. If you pay for a $14 order with $15, you are not tipping. Drivers don't count leftover coins, as they are insignificant next to the proper tip amount. Tipping is a simple, quick practice. On a $14 order, you could hand the driver $20 and ask for $3 back. You could pay for a $16.96 order with a $20 bill and tell the driver to keep it. If don't say anything, the driver will assume you want change from the $20. You could wait for change and then return some ones for the tip, but that's not as easy and quick.

2. Check. Include the tip on the check. Write the check for the sum of the tip and bill. Some stores don't take checks, so it would be helpful to ask when you order. You don't have to worry if the store will keep the tip--the drivers cash themselves out.

3. Credit card. On the receipt, write the tip on the line that says "Tip." Then write the grand total below that line. Sign below that line and you're done.

Most drivers don't have a problem with quarters for the tip, if you have to dig around for change. Just don't pay for the whole order that way.

If you can afford to pay for the pizza, you can afford to pay a small portion for the tip. Pizza is only a luxury item. Delivery is a further luxury. If you are seriously on your last dime, don't bother to order. Pick it up at the store. At this point, it would best to spend your money more wisely on groceries, instead.

The bill and the tip is one transaction. They are counted together when the driver cashes out. Some people may think they are cute when they separate the two and say, "Make sure to keep this for yourself," but it all falls into the same pile. Drivers oversee the cash register to give the store whatever they owe the store and to keep their tips.

If you don't tip, the driver may just turn and leave. It is a violation of store rules to be more rude than that. What you can seriously expect is later deliveries and colder pizza the next time you order. I don't condone more drastic acts of revenge, but they are known to happen so it's better to be nice to the guy who delivers your food.

Tipping is a fun thing to do. It's a way of saying "Thank you." You pay the employee directly for their work, instead of an indirect flat payment to the company. Tipping lets you evaluate the driver to keep them on their toes so they can provide you with the best service while unsupervised.

Hope this helps!
