food service people are jackasses

What the ****'s the deal with all you people in the food service industry? The employers won't pay a decent wage, and all you waitstaff/delivery people think the rest of us should make up for that. **** you, get another line of work if you don't like the pay. You knew the deal going in. It doesn't take a genius to carry around food, so the pay is commensurate.
Do you guys all tip the grocery boy? What about the kid at Home Depot that helps you load **** in the trunk of your car? The UPS man? Your faithful mailman?
All you whiny food service workers that constantly cry about low pay and cheap tippers need to come down off the cross so you can use the wood to build a bridge and get over it. Nobody put a gun to your head.

Yes, they knew the deal going in. The deal is that in this culture, they get tips.

Trying to change the cultural expectation that goes back many, many generations by stiffing the poorest members of society -- the ones who depend on those tips to keep from becoming homeless -- is just plain stupid, and/or heartless. It's not the thing that a human does to another human.

RE: food service people are jackasses

I think, rather than food service workers being jackasses or anything like that, I think the point is that its ridiculous to place such an expectation on people. It seems so simple - but perhaps its just the Australian culture. If you want someone to pay 'x' amount for something, then price it as such (don't be scared - if people want it, they'll still pay for it!), don't price it as 'y' and then just expect people somehow know that really behind the 'y' you really want 'x'.

You can't just blame the workers - the whole system is screwed. Why don't people just say what they want?

Compare it to a relationship. Guy asks girl "whats wrong?", girl responds "nothing", guy cracks it cause he knows its not nothing and that its really 'something' and how can he be expected to read her mind, girl cracks it because guy is being insensitive to her needs.....and everything spiralls downward from there - and its never going to work out.

Ok, stupid analogy....but if you don't place unreasonable 'unspoken' expectations on people and you wont get dissappointed. :-)

I agree Aussie. They should do away with tips, raise the price of pizza and pay the delivery guys more than poverty wages. It would make cheap jerks like Jerry either pay more or make their own pizza. And no, I'm not a pizza guy, but I used to be. As things are, I have some advice for you non-tippers: I wouldn't order from the same place more than once. You might get some extra toppings.

RE: food service people are jackasses

I would just like to add a few things here....a bit of personal experience. I work at a restaurant where I get paid $2.13 an hour. We get paid this much becuase they figure we will make tips, and we usually make out allright. The hourly wage isn't even what matters. The only thing we are there for is the tip. We don't even get $2.13 after taxes...(I've gotten a paycheck for a whopping $3.00...is that commensurate?)What boggles my mind are non-tippers...or those who forgot about the tip and did not make sure they had enough for a decent tip before they came in and got waited on. It's obvious that if something was horribly wrong and everything sucked that you shouldn't have to tip. But when a waiter/waitress does a good job and no tip is left, something is clearly wrong. (Same with anyone who does work for you...grocery, home depot, whatever.) Anyways, I never go to a restaurant without being prepared to leave 20ish% (if they are good) because after working in this industry, you really start appreciate waiters/waitresses more. And yes, we do remember who tips well and who doesn't. And yes, that does affect the service. Why waste the time making sure your glass is constantly full when we know we're not getting what we deserve for it? It literally amounts to next to nothing when we don't get tips. So we're not jackasses...its just a given that people who aren't complete assholes leave decent tips.

LAST...for some, this line of work is the best choice. Take, for instance, a 17 year old trying to make a car payment. I don't really think this is something you can judge unless you have worked in a restaurant and experienced the self-righteous people who complain about a mark on a lemon or a water spot on a knife.

But hey, to each his own. If you want to go to a restaurant and get waited on...having everything brought to you, etc. then complain about someone expecting a tip for their time and service...(and for you taking up a table that they could have otherwise made a decent tip on) then i guess that's just the kind of person you are. good for you, gtpjerry. i hope you get "extra toppings" on your pizza next time.

There is no excuse. You are there to serve people with a smile on your face and get paid for it. If you don't know how to deal with cranky customers or are unwilling to learn, then get into another line of work. Customers are not obligated to treat you nice.
