It must be also noted and recognized that keeping restrictive and complex immigration procedures inherently gives rise to the existence of 'illegal' immigrants that choose to bypass these bureaucratic procedures (thus by some accounts "breaking the law"). The existence of this criminilized group contributes to the substandard working conditions, under par pay scales, and abuse that such workers are offered. A person looking for work who has no legal residence is automatically offered lower wages and poorer working conditions. This of course benefits the callous employer that uses these workers.

borders (and fences)

I humbly appreciate the correction to 'xenofobia' (a mistake often made by spanish speakers where ph is often replaced by f in greek words).
I'd like to point out that the concept of immigration is a rather recent one. Historically, peoples, tribes, groups, have always 'migrated' from one territory to another when conditions deteriorated either by nature or by war. Ever since the inception of the nation-state some time after the middle ages (at least in europe) these movements of people suddenly became an issue of emmigration/immigration and little by little became a subject of control by the state.
I think that immigation (or in a more general sense 'migration') should be looked at as a force of nature: almost like water always moving from higher elevations to lower.
It is arguable whether the control of immigration is economically sensible, and this is a loooong argument I don't want to take on. But it is clear that the existence of 'legal' channels of immigration cannot stem the need of people to move. The only thing 'legal' immigration represents is a bureaucratic procedure that feeds federal institutions and feeds the states need for control of its population. What is gained from having to wait 10 years in order to reach the possibility to better a life?
Regarding the draconian measures put forward by the author below as a solution to the immigation problem, I would like to offer a different market oriented possibility. Would it not reduce the demand for jobs typically taken by southern immigrants and in fact the existence of such jobs if immigration where to be decriminilized? Imagine if there were 30 million people looking for at most 5 million farming and other assorted jobs. As the author pointed out, if there are no jobs, there will be no 'illegal' immigrants looking for jobs...
Another stab at a solution is to help the development of infrastructure and industry in those countries hemorrhaging jobles people, not just propping up their corrupt governments.

Kindly

Literacy isn't enough

If only the author below had a realistic grasp of history or current events (or knew how to spell "xenophobic"). The US accepts more legal immigrants every year (2 million) than any other country, adding to our diversity, the breadth and depth of our understanding of the world, and thus our strength as a nation. But every soveriegn nation has the right to control its own borders and set its own immigration standards.

True, Europeans began a genocidal invasion of this continent over 4 centuries ago, virtually obliterating the 500 indiginous nations; but how does that relate to the present crisis of unchecked illegal immigration? Are we, by your analogy, now in the position of the Native Americans, with the illegal immigrants cast in the roll of the European invaders? If so, do we not have the right, even the obligation to our families, to resist this new "invasion?"

All my ancestors, and the woman I love, immigrated to this country legally, after the foundation of the United States, as did the ancestors of most US citizens (those that were not forcibly brought her as slaves). I have no doubt that, like the immigrants of today (legal or otherwise) they came here seeking opportunities unavaliable in their native lands. They waited their turn and observed the laws of their new homeland. Should we now be expected to hold immigrants to a lower standard?

But to say that illegal immigrants are only "moving away from their own communities to work here and build family and infrastructure" is innacurate and vastly over-simplified. Having ignored our laws to enter our country illegally they have blocked their only path to permanent residency and as such cannot expect to spend the rest of their lives here. They have chosen to live as fugitives. Many are not even interested in assimilating into American culture (a necessity for econonic prosperity). The vast majority are low-skilled workers who undercut and artificially lower the wages of low-skilled American workers and legal immigrants by working in the underground economy for sub-standard wages.

And the assertion that "The only thing that has changed is our own xenofobia and fear of change" is simply wrong. When was the general populace of United States less xenophobic? Remember the Alien and Sedition Act? The Japanese Internment Camps of WWII? And "change" is inevitable, but change is not always for the better. Should we not resist "change" that does us harm and strive rather for improvement?

The solution to out present crisis of illegal immigration is not the nearly impossible task of locating and deporting the 12-20 million illegal immigrants already in this country. Rather I would advocate the arrest, conviction and meaningful punnishment (by which I mean seizure of assets and jail time) of those who knowingly employ them. When the jobs disappear most of the illegal immigrants will follow.

I must complement septor on his choice of analogy; in fact the illegal aliens are doing just that, crossing the border to enter our fields, pick the produce at sub minimum wage, and pass the savings on to US agricultural corporations and consumers.

If only the author below knew how to write, maybe he would also know that our fathers (and forefathers) were also at some point immigrants (arguably illegal if we apply todays definition of legal immigration). At some point, europeans came over the pond and took all the territory they could. In the 400 years or so thereafter, people from all over the world came over moving away from their own communities to work here and build family and infrastructure. That's exactly what the 'new' and arguably 'illegal' immigrants are doing. The only thing that has changed is our own xenofobia and fear of change.

Alien arrests

Illegal aliens are exactly that illegal. They don't have a right to expect anything but deportation. They come to take not give.If there dissatisfied with the economic conditions in their own country they need to work within their own communitys to improve their conditions. What if both me and my neighbor each had gardens, I plant my seeds and basically decide to let the sun and rain do its thing. But my neighbor tends to his garden he's out their weeding, fertilizing and watering when their is no rain. Now when its harvest time and his garden not mine is lush and fruitful.I don't have the right to hop the fence and start picking the fruits of his labor. Our fathers labored long and hard to build this wonderful country so their children could live free and prosper. You have nothing to feel guilty about, this country belongs to you.

Documents we don't need no stinking documents.

We also need to clean up all the undocumented firearms and undocumented pharmaceuticals sold by undocumented apothacaries all over the city.

The correct term for them is "illegals," not "undocumented workers." They weren't arrested because they were missing paperwork, they were arrested because they broke the law.
