Obama and Halle Berry

Why is it that they are considered afro-american when they are only half-afro-american? I am not being racist I just don't understand why they need to fall into any category and why that category is always the afro-american side?

RE: Obama and Halle Berry

The term "African-American" should be considered an offensive term. It assumes that:

(a) - Anyone that is black is American.
(b) - Anyone that is black comes from Africa and implies that every black person is a slave descendant from Africa. That should be offensive to any black person coming from the Caribbean or South America.
(c) - Only black people come from Africa. That should be offensive to the millions of white and Mideastern people that live there.

People are so quick to be politically correct, they don't think about the term they are actually using.

Is this guy African American?

What about her?

RE: Obama and Halle Berry

What does it matter really? We're all just people - we all have emotions, personalities (well, sure, some lack personality), likes and dislikes.

Sure, skin colour can be used to as a general description of someone - but I don't see how skin colour is any different to eye colour or anything else. It is what it is, and if someone gets it slightly wrong then who cares, why get all offended about it? Some people think I have brown eyes, but really I think they're more hazel...but so what? Who cares. Its just a colour, and one isn't better than the other. And my skin colour? In winter my skin gets so pale I'm almost see-through (damn Melbourne weather), but who cares-its just my skin.

I'm the same as everyone else on the inside, and any generalisations or descriptions (correct or incorrect)of my physical appearance aren't going to change who I am.

There'd be no need for all this 'Political Correctness' if people just chilled out.

RE: Obama and Halle Berry

In the U.S. there are many people that are rabid about using the term "African-American" for everyone no matter where in the world they come from because they think it is the "correct" term.

You reminded me that it is also offensive to call Aborigines African American.

RE: Obama and Halle Berry

I see what you're saying.

All I'm saying is that its not 'offensive' its just incorrect, and people shouldn't let it get to them!

I understand that people take political correctness too far and end up getting it wrong, however I believe that is completely different from being racist and/or offensive.

RE: Obama and Halle Berry

It isn't offensive to you but it can be to someone it applies to.

Aussies are just a bunch of convicts.

That is incorrect. It isn't offensive to me but I bet I could find a lot of you that would think otherwise.
