Osama bin Laden (remember him? The 9/11 guy? Like seven feet tall, with failing kidneys, living in a cave? Special Forces and the CIA can't find him? Who wasn't from Iraq?) is from Saudi....from a very prosperous Saudi family, in fact. His relatives own the construction company that built whatever base replaced Prince Sultan Air Base, from which the US and a few French and British aircraft staged Operation: Southern Watch (enforcing the interwar southern no-fly zone). Nothing weird or disconcerting, I'm sure, for the first troops who moved into THOSE rooms. |

Incidentally, Wikipedia (which is, admittedly, an imperfect system), says that in detaining Maher Arar, the Americans were probably acting on information from the RCMP....the Canadian Mounties. Don't know if it's true, but it certainly puts a kink in the argument if it is. I'm not looking for a fight. I'm just sayin'. |

If you're trying to break it down geographically, yeah, the word "Arabia" means a peninsula straddling Africa and Asia. On it are Saudi Arabia....Yemen....I think UAE, maybe(?)....and some other top vacation sites for US troops. I could open a new Internet window to look at a map, but it's immaterial to my point. If you're trying to figure this thing ethnically, which it sounds like Kirstin (or Kirsten? I forget...) is, then she's talking about Arabs as an ethnic group. But it's not even close to that simple; ethnic breakdowns get really hairy and confusing, with huge rivalries based on the Sunni/Shiite religious split, national borders drawn haphazardly by the West after WWI, and a whole slew of other things. Many Iraqis, for example, wish we'd stop dropping bombs all over the damn place! How long do you think Redcoats were in Boston before Loyalists started wanting them out? But there's more! Most of the people there who have issues with the US don't have it based on their Arab ethnicity (although some, who dream of a Pan-Arabic state, do)....most just want the US (and the state of Israel) out of their oil-rich (and God-rich, if you're into that) territories. Others do have authentically religious motives (before you tell me that's "backwards," look at the American President). And - get this! - those Iranians we're having so much trouble with, they're not even ethnically Arabic, but Persian! And you have ethnic Turks and Kurds and all kinds of other people who don't seem to like us a whole lot. So there's my ranting dissertation in a couple hundred words. Simplistic, but a start for people who wish Baghdad should stop fighting against Iraq or whatever. |
