| Posted By: edgar Posted On: Jan 3, 2008 Views: 3279 | Recreational drug use by the president Hold the president of the US to a lower standard than professional athletes? If alcohol/drugs are performance enhancing or recreational it doesn't matter. Mind altered is a dangerous state for a world leader. |
| Posted By: Austin Posted On: Dec 16, 2007 Views: 3127 | give the guy or gal a break In response to previous posts below: To think that the president has to always be alert 24/7 for 4 years is unreasonable--What about sleeping? Being awakened in the middle of the night to deal with an urgent matter, for example, might find the President as equally impaired as say one or two drinks. And don't you think it would be unrealistic to think that the President would go the whole 4 years without ever taking a break from his or her job duties. |
| Posted By: Emom Posted On: Sep 24, 2007 Views: 3454 | Under the Influence I absolutely agree with the poster below. This is a incredibly demanding job. Can you imagine Camp David, vacation and Mr. President is high or drunk and an attack on our country occurs. I don't think he would be to alert to deal witht he situation at hand. Not saying that some substances should be legalized, but I guess you sacrifice some to become president by working a job that is 24/7 for 4 years or better. |

| Posted By: Steve Richardson Posted On: May 19, 2007 Views: 1853 | A President and Recreational Drugs There are many things which I believe should be perfectly legal but which ought to be avoided under some particular circumstances, or even under all circumstances. Given the responsibilities of the office of President -- particularly those relating to defense and military emergencies -- while holding that office, no individual should allow him/herself to function while impaired. The need for clear thought and sound judgment on the part of the officeholder at any given moment without forewarning, 24 hours per day, 7 days a week for the duration of a four year Presidential term is critical in this role. Just as airlines, irrespective of regulations, would not permit their pilots to fly while intoxicated, and businesses in general do not permit their employees to be impaired during the workday, while serving as commander in chief and custodian of the nuclear codes -- a 24/7/52/365/4 responsibility -- no President should allow him/herself to be impaired while serving in office. This should not be established a matter of law, it should be a matter of character and sound judgment on the part of any President and on the part of those who elect the President. |
