cover art

My friend and I vent over this all the time! It never fails, I am taking a book to the Doctor with me to read while I'm in the waiting room; and I forget that the cover of my book is racy, then I'm embarrassed to be reading it! This is espeially true when I am at the pediatrician's office! (OR if I take to somewhere my parents or people from church may see it!) People think I like reading smut, not to mention that my husband thinks I am reading some glorified porno.

I also hate when the cover art depicts the hero and heroine that is the opposite of the description in the book. That is so irritating.
There is an author out there who used the SAME MAN (a model, who -I won't name- but he has long boring brown hair and too square jawline) for EVERY cover she has ever published, regardless of the description she's writen about in the book. I have read some of these books and they are good but the cover makes me hesitant to pick it up.

Do Author's not have a choice when picking the cover art?

I used to like romance novels . . .

I used to like romance novels. Now I don't. Now I'm getting sick of them. They are so slow and boring these days. And I guess you can say I'm starting to feel pretty resentful of them.
There's no love in the stories - or no feelings of real love - and the "love scenes" are just a bunch of generic sexual acts thrown together to fuel your sex drive for maybe all of 3 seconds.

But maybe I'm being harsh. Maybe there are good writers out there that I just haven't found yet.

I'm starting to get into romantic parodies myself. I liked "Breathless". Found it on lulu.com. It's kind of harsh, but that's just how feeling these days in regards to romance novels. Harsh.

definately editting!

I agree with you guys! I understand it's ALOT of editting when you have such a big novel and all but big things like' the character's name is wrong. But if it is something minor I usually skip over it and if there are too many I get frustrated because I'm focusing on the grammar and not the story.

editing

I totally agree! Nothing pulls me out of a story faster than bad editing. I do a lot of proofreading for co-workers so I'm constantly amazed what people who do it for a living let slip by. One author, who shall remain nameless (not one our chicks), uses one word throughout her books so often that it pulls me out of the story every time. I'm almost to the point where I'm going to either white out or mark out the word in all her books I own (over 20). I know, I'm a nut, but it bothers me that much! :o)

It Wasn't on the Poll

One thing that was not included in the poll that really does make me throw the book against the wall is lack of editing/bad editing/no editing. What happened to proofreading?

Big name publishers that used to produce quality work are now releasing books with typos, misspelled words, wrong gender pronouns, etc. and I can't fully express just how distracting it is to me. One main reason I read as often as I do is to escape from my everyday life into the story. When I have to stop and mentally correct something in the book and think "oh, that should be 'her' not 'him' then I am no longer immersed in the story and I strongly resent that.

When I purchase a new book, I feel I am paying not only for the author's created story but also the printing, the cover art, the editing, proofreading, paper quality, ink, etc.

I read many of the Squawker authors, and while the quality of the authors imaginations is not in doubt, the printed result is often disappointing.
