Giving everyone a gun has never been the solution and only morons that have about 1/1,000,000% of actual brain function think that. Give people guns and they will use them. It has played out over and over and that is the way it will always be. Towns like Deadwood, SD and Bodie,CA were known for their armed citizens and large body counts. The gang populations in every major city are armed to the teeth and all that guarantees them is that odds are they will be shot at some point. There is no rational argument for needing an assault rifle. I own two guns and am a former NRA member so don't give me any of this "It's our right" crap. The constitution gives the right to own guns but that has never been translated into any gun. You can not put up an AA gun in your front yard or mount a 40 caliber on your front porch. On those rare occasions when a group of ninja trained terrorists do attempt to break in to my home, I am more than capable of defending myself with my lowly non-assualt rifle and shotgun. That being said, a person that knows how to shoot and is mentally able to gun down innocent people, will always be a danger no matter what gun they have. These shootings are just a symptom of a bigger problem. |

I don't think it'd hurt, but I don't think it'd help either. Here's why. Guns are manufactured in the US. Even if no guns could be sold here, ever again, they'd still be here. A smart criminal would break into a gun factory, or get a job at one. Cuban cigars are illegal. Can you buy them online? Yes. Can they be shipped to Canada, then re-shipped to the US and sold as a canadian import? Yes. Who'd have thought there was a way around THAT embargo. I don't have a stance either way for the "Well then only the bad guys would have them" theory (I think both arguments are stupid, honestly). But, as someone pointed out earlier in the thread, the problem at VT, Columbine, Waco, etc. certianly was NOT a lack of guns. If someone wants to go on a mass killing spree badly enough, they'll figure out a way. Gun control won't stop violence. |

If getting a gun requires planning and thought, then a crazy irrational guy will HAVE to calm down before he can get one. If you can walk right out and buy one, then one day of insane depression can lead to a killing spree. I agree completely that the problem will be nowhere near eliminated no matter what happens, but the harder it is to get a gun, the more rational you have to be at the time to pull it off. This wasn't a purchase made on the way to school. By all accounts he was a sick and twisted individual and no amount of time was going to cool him off. To walk into a room and shoot over 40 people with pistols requires knowing how to shoot and complete comfort in what you are doing. Someone nervous is going to do a whole lot of missing. This guy's rubberband was wound way to tight and it was only a matter of time before he snapped. If he wouldn't have had access to guns he would have used some other method. |
