| Posted By: Wild Man Posted On: Feb 23, 2008 Views: 883 | Expamsion I'm hearing rumblings that there may be some expansion and/or changes in the Forest City league next year. Can anyone confirm this or have any details ? |
| Posted By: Hockeyman Posted On: Jul 12, 2007 Views: 1294 | curfew I find a number of the comments about curfews and burnt ice quite interesting. I get the impression that sometimes people think that the GLHA is the only hockey association that uses the hockey rinks especially when I hear comments that this ice pad was empty etc. The city essentially tells each association how much ice they will receive and at what times of the day during the week this ice is available. Out of this ice time that is alotted games and practices will be scheduled. Ther are sometimes during a season when ice does burn, teams go to tournaments and don't turn the practice ice back to the association to be used, people don't want to practice at 7 00am on Saturday morning etc. On the curfew aspect I agree that games should not be curfewed. |
| Posted By: Wild Man Posted On: Jul 4, 2007 Views: 1407 | Curfews & Expansion There's been a lot of talk about curfews and I agree it would benefit the league to eliminate them but apparently that's not going to happen this year. Time to accept it, get ready for the upcoming season and support our kid's enjoyment of the sport. ( by 'support', I mean cheering and applauding politely - not screaming and yelling profanities at the other team). How about starting a new topic - Expansion, for example ? Does anyone here agree that having 8-10 teams in your division would be better than the same 4 or 5 ? Am I dreaming that this could actually happen or is there a slight chance that it may be possible someday ? |
| Posted By: skeptic Posted On: Jul 2, 2007 Views: 1214 | curfew I heard after all this talk it appears that we will again have curfew in the Foret City this coming year,if the desire is to truly become a competitive league stop acting like HL and remove the curfew,Sarnia, Woodstock and surrounding areas have no curfew in their MD program, decide games as they should be decided, by playing them out fully. If I sat and thought about it long enough I could come up with reasons for a curfew and reason for no curfew, stop thinking and make a decision either way, move forward and or stay stagnant!! |
| Posted By: Chris Francis Posted On: Jun 18, 2007 Views: 1061 | Longer games I don't think the curfew is a big deal. Occasionally there are games with a lot of penalties and the teams end up with less playing time. However, in general the refs are good at ensuring that teams don't waste time. When you don't have a curfew, then scheduling the time to clean the ice is more difficult. That results in situations where the Zamboni driver is waiting for the game to end or the ice sits for a few minutes after the teams have left the ice. A bigger issue is whether the current 50 minutes of ice time is enough for bantam aged players. Currently, Forest City teams at the Minor Midget age get 80 minutes of ice time for their games vs. 50 minutes for younger ages. What about giving Bantam aged teams 65 minutes for games? The flood after two periods is not necessary, so all 15 minutes would be extra playing time. That would increase the length of games by about 30%. So, if 50 minutes of ice time translates into about 33 minutes of stop time, then 65 minutes should translate into about 43 minutes of stop time. Consider the amount of time required to drive to the rink and get dressed, especially for out of town games. Also, consider that most Bantam Forest City teams have three full lines for most if not every game. Players, coaches, and parents would appreciate the extra playing time and would be willing to pay for the extra ice time. Thanks for the opportunity to give this feedback. Chris |
| Posted By: ITS FOR THE KIDS Posted On: Jun 18, 2007 Views: 972 | FCHL Curfew Hockey Dad is right sooo much ice in this city burnt. We were always offered free ice from our association. Just walk into Western fair in the middle of the season and see the lights off. GLHA needs to address late starting games because of no timekeepers or poor referees who cannot be motivated to skate to get a puck in the far end.Refs come on the ice too late and then decide to check a game sheet for problems, then they fix it and the buzzer goes then the coaches collect the pucks bring kids in the doors line up and the puck drops. Far too much time taken up here. Game sheets should be delivered to the refs dressing room when the zamboni comes on the ice, sheets not filed in correctly result in a delay of game penalty.Tardy referees should be addressed.Adding costs to the already expensive sport is not needed. Time management is. |
| Posted By: HOCKEY DAD Posted On: Jun 14, 2007 Views: 974 | CURFEW From the rumours I have heard around the rinks there was well over 200hrs of burnt ice time last year so I can't see why it is not possible to play all games with no curfew |
| Posted By: Wally Posted On: May 31, 2007 Views: 1044 | Curfew Instead of all or nothing, why not try something different. Why not look at tie games and do like the NHL. Forget sudden death overtime just do a shootout. The kids would love it. The whole point about curfew only comes into discussion when there's a minute left in a 1 goal or tie game. If there is a decisive advantage, curfew doesn't matter. I know it's hard to plan ice time based on that but you could look at historical data regarding ties. Just my 2 cents. |
| Posted By: Tony Posted On: May 22, 2007 Views: 1159 | Forest City Curfew No curfew games would be nice but it seems like from the information I have seen that we just don't have the icetime in the city of London. Most development leagues would probably agree that we need more practice time. I know the kids love the games but our kids played 65 this year including tournaments and playoffs and I think that is enough. If we truelly are MD (Minor Development)then that should be the concentration. Check out Hockey Canada or any other governing body regarding hockey in the world and they will say that kids should practice atleast twice if not three times as much as they play |
| Posted By: Wild man Posted On: May 14, 2007 Views: 1225 | More Teams Cursor, thanks for the advice. Much appreciated. I realize there are many reasons preventing this from happening but until the question's asked, we won't ever know what those reasons are. Maybe someday, expansion may actually happen - anything's possible. I think if a poll were taken, most people would rather see an expanded league, rather than to continue playing the same 4 or 5 teams over and over again for 8 months. I not only know all the parents on our team, I now know all the parents on the other teams as well. As far as applying for a spot on the board, I think I'll take a pass. I just thought it would be a nice change to have some Mackies fries at a hockey game instead of my usual Tim Hortons :-) |
| Posted By: Cursor Posted On: May 14, 2007 Views: 1125 | teams Wild Man, it sounds like you have some ideas worth tabling....and I mean that sincerely. I urge you to get involved to try and make it happen....but to give you a start we are Alliance and they are OMHA...and on top of that they would have to want the merge as well....we can't go and take over leagues that we think are a good fit for us...go to your league web site find out who's on the executive and send them an email saying you'd like a directors position (usually an intro spot on the board). All I'm saying is that if you can ask a question be prepared to work out some answers...otherwise sit back and enjoy the ride. |
| Posted By: Wild Man Posted On: May 13, 2007 Views: 1048 | More Teams Just asking the question Cursor. If you know the answer (and it sounds as though you do), why not tell us what prevents our league from expanding. If the NHL can put a hockey team on the beach in Florida, why can't we play hockey on the beach in Port Stanley ? |
| Posted By: Cursor Posted On: May 11, 2007 Views: 1013 | teams Wild Man...Join your Associations Board of Directors and find out what it takes to make that happen....I'm sure they are looking for new ideas....by the way it's not that easy |
| Posted By: Wild Man Posted On: May 10, 2007 Views: 1009 | More Teams Has anyone ever considered having Forest City join up with the Shamrock league (Lambeth, St.Thomas, Port Stanley etc)? Would it not be in the best interest of both leagues to unite ? I'm sure it would be more exciting to play in a divison of 9 or 10 teams rather than to continue playing the same 4 or 5 teams over and over gain. What is preventing this from happening ? |
| Posted By: Jerimie Lywood Posted On: May 8, 2007 Views: 1022 | Cerfew The cost of ice is high enough that if non-curfewed games were to take place the cost of registration would rise if the same amount of games were wanted. How about three ten minute periods or 10-10-12. As a coach and ex-player I know the feeling of loosing due to curfew. The kids are the reason we are here and to give them a fair chance of winning every game is what is needed. As for getting the right people in to make changes, well volunteers do NOT get paid for the hundreds of hours spent at the rink, at home planning, or other hockey related functions so I say Thank You for your time and effort. |
