Somewhere in the 700's, one group said that one guy was the descendent of Mohammad, and another group said that this other guy was the descendent. I don't remember the names, but thats where they started the split. Then (much like the western Catholic church and the Eastern Orthodox Catholic church) they started growing in different directions. There are NOW many differences in how they worship, but thats how it started. BTW: The differences in the western and eastern orthodox churches are that at one point the eastern orthodox church denied the power of a particular Pope, and named their own. Look it up. Its kinda interesting. |

Mohammed lived in the early 7th century (600's) not in the 400's. When he died some of his followers believed that they needed a living descendant of Mohammed to interpret the Koran and act as their spititual leader. This group eventually became the Shia. Sunni's on the other hand believe that each individual can interpret the Koran and they look to theologians for guidence in their interpretation of the Koran but not as spiritual leaders of the religion. |

| Posted By: vancouver Posted On: Jun 27, 2007 Views: 808 | RE: Sunni and Shiite prob in a nutshell The original schism is kinda a mix of what has been said already. the key thing is whether islam needed a true-blue descendant of muhammad pope-style leader, called the caliph. the sunni liked the caliph, and the shiite didnt. basically anything that the protestants dont like about the pope, the shiites dont like about the caliph. theres good (enough) articles in wikipedia for those of you who dont mind minimal research to understand an important issue in the world :) |
