His Best Films

Not to have either Videodrome or Dead Ringers on this list of possible bests displays what I percieve to be a monstrous ignorance of Cronenberg's oeuvre.

The very suggestion that a trifling assignment like the Dead Zone could be superior to either of these films is patently absurd.

It's not a matter of opinion. It simply is.

Inconsistency

I'd say he's overrated, or at least inconsistent, only in that he'd made a few truly awful films like Crash.

Also, History of Violence wasn't terrible, but I was ultimately disappointed with it. I could deal with him making a film that strayed so far from the "body horror" genre he's known for. But the story was so dull and predictable.

On the other hand, he made one of the greatest films I've ever seen, Videodrome. Naked Lunch was also great.

Overrated

I only saw "A History of Violence" because of your recommendation, and man what a mistake that was. CINECAST!ing horrible film. Just like all of his. Is there a more overrated director? I think the Director's Guild should let people use "David Cronenberg" the way they used to use "Alan Smithee." His oeuvre wouldn't miss a beat.

Crash?!??

Crash?!?? Really? Oh, Matty, Matty, Matty...

My vote would go to Dead Ringers (the best ideas, although Videodrome is a close second in this regard). I would place eXistenZ at #2.

Going with the crowd

Hate to take the "popular" choice, but I have to go with History of Violence. I really can't say I had truly loved a Cronenberg movie until History of Violence, and it's solely because of that movie (okay...maybe a bit because of Naomi Watts) that Eastern Promises has been my most anticipated movie all year.

Whew

Was expecting to be torn between Videodrome (best ideas) and eXisTenZ (most fun). As it turns out, I don't have to decide. Thanks filmspotting!

eXistenZ

I'm glad that eXistenZ wasn't ignored by Filmspotting listeners, even if it was ignored by the Filmspotting hosts. Haha. No it actually really is a good movie, Jude Law at his best, in my opinion. Great concept, especially now that the technology in that movie doesn't even seem that far-fetched these days.

eXistenZ

XZ all the way!

"A History of Violence" sounded like it was going to be an exploration of how an average citizen can be drawn into violence, or perhaps even a parable of how violence is generated in human society.

...but no. It's literally about a guy with violence in his past.

Long Kiss Goodnight version 2.0.

The Brood

Seriously though, I like The Brood a lot, just reading the DVD case makes me laugh.

Really?

Really? No love for Scanners? I know it isn't his best but it was referenced in Wayne's World so it must be good, right?

Videodrome

Seriously, where is Videodrome? That is the cornerstone film of his entire project and his best work.

toss-up

It's between Dead Ringers and eXistenZ for me. I think Spider is underrated and A History of Violence is a tad overrated, upon a 3rd viewing. Can't wait to see his new one.

Dead Ringers

I have seen all of Cronenberg's films and there is no doubt in my mind that "Dead Ringers" is his greatest achievement.

Dead Ringers!

These guys are right, glaring omission from the choices! If you haven't seen Dead Ringers you've missed out on a truly great film.

Ringers

I like Dead Ringers. We considered it.
