Rushmore

I like Royal Tenanbaums alot but Rushmore, to me, seemed to be Wes Anderson at the top of his game. As much as I liked RT, Rushmore seemed to be pure storytelling with great empathic characters that I actually cared about and, the most important thing here, wasn't so damned over the top quirky. There is quirkiness in Rushmore to be sure, but it doesn't seem quite as forced as it does in RT. I don't mention Bottlerocket or Life Aquatic because I think those two films were just okay, but for my money, it's Rushmore all the way.

Why Bottle Rocket??

I need someone to explain to be why Bottle Rocket is so great. I watched this movie for the first time a couple of days ago specifically because I keep hearing people say that Bottle Rocket is better then the Royal Tenenbaums. I almost hated Bottle Rocket, almost. The capper gone-wrong at the end is pretty funny, but I got confused. Am I supposed to laugh at all of the bad luck or am I supposed to feel bad for Dignan? After finishing Bottle Rocket I immediately felt like it was a 'less funny' Napolean Dynamite. Perhaps the movie does something special but I wasn't entertained.

wes anderson

In Bottle Rocket, he has the most subtle touch, and though it comes across as a kind of goofy dream, there's a sense of realism to the movie that isn't matched in any subsequent work, except Rushmore, which is nearly as good, but isn't shadowed by the tragic feel that haunts BR. The detail, the music, the characters and the absurd disaster of Dignan's hopes and plans all combine to make the film feel like a funny, minor-key commentary on the myth of success in America. Rushmore is the full realization of Anderson's talent, but feels almost like too much. He's too on top of his game, where in BR it's all inspired and has a beauty he can't seem to match in anything else he's done. Now he just sinks into deeper and deeper self-parody.

Wes Anderson

The life Aquatic is not the best WA film but it is the one I enjoyed the most. The way he riffs on the Jacques Couteau legend in the crazy world that Team Zizzou live in makes me smirk any time I think about it. He is one film maker I always look forward to hearing about, he may be overated a fraction but who isn't these days, still a genius and one of the freshest auteurs today.

Bottle Rocket

Easily the best.

And Dignan OWNS this film.

Wes

To me his films become less self-conscious and contrived as they go. By the time you get to The Life Aquatic he's proved himself and is just having fun, which is why it's the most fun and rewatchable. That and the fact that Cate Blanchett is beyond hot.

Wes Anderson

I think it depends on the order in which Wes Anderson's films are viewed as to the outcome of naming a favorite film of his. I saw Rushmore first (on DVD) and thought it was great! It really got me looking forward to The Royal Tennenbaums which was soon to come to theaters at the time. I went to see Ocean's 11 and my favorite part was the Tennenbaums trailer. When I went to see R.T. I was blown away. The way Wes Anderson fills the screen to where every frame is like a painting mixed with quarky, irreverent characters is often copied, but unmatched in Hollywood. I then went back and saw Bottle Rocket. I thought it was good, and one could see the beginings of excellence, and a strong personal style. The Life Aquatic was a bit of a dissapointment apon the first viewing, but it is a film that gets better at each viewing. I am proud to say that I own all 4 of Wes Andersons films on DVD and am looking forward to The Darjelling Limited.

Rushmore

... is a masterpiece. Yep I said it. Bill Murrey's greatest role.

And Zizzou is incredibly underrated - it becomes much better upon second viewing.

Bottle Rocket is solid except for the way too long motel sequence; Tennenbaums starts strong but loses steam.

The hell is wrong with quirk? Quirk without substance (Napolean Dynamite) can be dreadful, but quirk in Anderson's films actually means something. And the detail he puts to his "quirk" is very specific and narratively complex. And, oh yes... hilarious.

Bottle Rocket

Bottle Rocket was the least Wes-Anderson-esque of all his films, and thus the best. I agree wholeheartedly with Matty—I despise all the "quirk" in Anderson's films. I was sick of it five minutes into Rushmore, and I'm not sure why I bothered giving Tenenbaums a chance. Only saw Bottle Rocket due to Sam, and I did end up liking it. But no more Wes Anderson for me, henceforth.

American Express

Need to add his American Express Commercial as an option. "Are those my birds? I need those."

Overrated

Thanks for the overrated choice. Though, if it were an option, I might be ever so tempted to vote for his new short film, "Hotel Chevalier".

Anderson Curve of Dimishing Returns

I liked Bottle Rocket, and I love Rushmore, but Royal Tenenbaums bored the hell out of me. I couldn't finish Zissou (Kentucky Air joke aside). I've never understood the infatuation and loyalty the latter two inspire.
