Clooney- not great?

As a matter of fact, he's a pretty solid actor who makes great choices, and not just as an actor but even more so as a producer and sometimes-director. His most recent effort, "Michael Clayton," is I believe his definitive work as an actor. There is within him a fatigue, and a stillness, even a slow-wittedness that together defy the man himself. While he does rely on some known Clooney-isms (such as his Redford style double-take and the unusual cadence of his delivery even in scenes of rage) there is a final shot of him in a cab, as the credits roll, where his face just barely registers at least 5 or six sequential emotions, none of which really envelops him-- or the viewer-- but which almost hint, even tease at the potential. It's simply outstanding work.

A unique talent

I would have preferred a choice between solid and excellent. When Clooney is at his best, I can't think of another actor that could pull off what he brings to a role. I would simply cite "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?" as something representative of why we need George Clooney.

He's a fantastic actor.

Actually, and I am in the definite minority here, but I loved George Clooney in Intolerable Cruelty. The movie wasn't that great, but he was. He was amazing in Syriana. He was amazing in O Brother Where Art Thou, amongst the many others have named. Batman and Robin? Yeah, that sucked. Peacemaker? Not that great either. But hey, that's a pretty solid record if you ask me; hence, the "pretty solid actor" choice.

Clooney Being Clooney

People use that "He's just playing himself" line all the time, but it doesn't really mean anything. You mean to tell me Clooney was just being himself in The Good German? Or Syriana? That's crap. I think people have an idea of who he is based on how he's portrayed in tabloids, and they overlay that idea onto the roles he plays. So unless he's playing something really far out, they just think he's being himself. Simply unfair. For the most part, I think he's a solid actor who seems to be improving with each film he makes, and now that he's really taking on some meaty roles that promises us some truly great performances in the future.

A Solid Actor...but not great

I think he's had his moments. I enjoyed his performances in "Out Of Sight", "O Brother Where Art Thou", "Ocean's Eleven" and "Three Kings". Granted he's had his stinkers, most noticeably "Batman and Robin" and "the Peacemaker", but let's face it who hasn't. The Clooney name doesn't deter or attract me to a movie, but I give credit where credit's due.

Good Choices?

I'm not convinced that he always makes good choices. Admittedly he probably has a better ratio of good movies to stinkers than most actors, but the stinkers are pretty bad - Intolerable Cruelty, Perfect Storm, Oceans Twelve (ok, maybe not his fault) and, worst of all, Michael Clayton.

Clooney

I know he's not great but I just simply like most of his movies. To me he has the humorous attitude of Harrison Ford but with a bit more sophistication (looks good in a tux). Sort of a twinkle in his eye.

Clooney? Meh...

Clooney has made dozens of movies. I've probably seen at least 10-12, and only once (O Brother Where Art Thou?) have I really thought he was even moderately impressive. I've never really felt like he actually gets into a character, and I know saying this is cliche, but I feel pretty much every role he does is just George Clooney being George Clooney.
