Personal Responsibility

I think that so many people today are looking for someone to blame for things that are not right in their lives that blaming others just becomes another bad habit. Wake up people; this is college, not primary school. You are adults and it's time to take care of your own business, it is called personal responsibility. Sooner or later you will have to take responsibility for your life, so stop blaming Financial Aid and the Admissions office for not holding your hand. Make a point to find out what is needed and follow through on your end before you begin criticizing others. This is a valuable life lesson and one that I hope you will pass along to others.

Financial Aid

Unfortunately, I think that we try to place blame on others, without first doing our own homework. I think that as adults we need to be more responsible. Things don't just happen on their own. We must take the initiative and find out what we need to do. No one will ever get upset with us for asking too many questions. I too have recently started back to school and had no clue that there were additional documents needed. If I had taken the time to find out what was going on I would have known that the Federal Government was requesting additional information. Once that was turned in and reviewed, things went a bit smoother. Ask questions. Be persistent.

Financial Aid

I stay on top of my financial aid, the people in the office have no clue what they are doing and lose documents. Not asking to be coddled, just asking that they not lose my paperwork. I'm currently thankful that I am going to school far away from here next semester.

Student Services

I am always amazed at what is preceived and what is actual fact. It is true that when financial aid is being applied for it takes much longer than any other process but that is because the FAFSA is a US Government document and their rules apply, not GHC's rules. It is the responsibility of the student to ALWAYS keep track of what is going on with their application. Never assume everthing will be ok. If documents are required to backup your financial aid application ,it is the responsibility of the student to make sure those documents are provided to the FA office. It is true that Fin Aid is often times very frustrating, but if it is handled in a timely manner before the deadlines, the process runs smoothly. I do agree that the FA office should enhance their customer service skills, but don't judge all by the actions of one. They are there to help you.

I think college is a time and place where GHC students will grow up and take responsibility for their future. The 'real world' won't coddle you; it is your responsibility to take all steps to ensure you get the education you deserve.

Financial aid

The financial aid office has no idea what they are doing!!! I have a zero balance with 2 semesters only to find out I now owe for out-of-state when I live right up the road. What is going on there?

Admissions/ Financial Aid

I can certainly understand a student's frustration when he or she is confused concerning their financial aid. People seem to get frustrated when they don't understand. As a student, it is imperative to keep on top of all of the requirements and deadlines necessary to have financial aid. I think that the office of financial aid does a good job of posting the important information on the website, as well as notifying students through letters. In COLLEGE, it is the student's responsibility to succeed. As an 18 year old, I was accustomed to my parents taking care of all my "business," and I assumed it would be that way in college. Nobody sends a letter home with you reminding you to bring a copy of your taxes so that you may get your financial aid. I feel like every time that I have had an issue to deal with, the office has helped me by showing me where to look. I don't expect them to do it all for me, nor would I want them to. As a much older student, I appreciate the experience of learning; whether it is learning Calculus or how to fill out the FAFSA!

Financial Aid

I have been trying since August and I have yet to get my Financial Aid straightened out. Everytime I go to the office I have new missing documents, and when I asked for help to fill them out, the girl looked puzzled as if she didn't know what to do. Also, everytime I go there the person is in training or doesn't even want to be there. How is someone supposed to help you if they don't even care???

Poor Representation

I submitted my application and waited and waited. I graduated from a Christian school years ago and felt I had a good record only after the 5th time of calling and 4 months later did I find out that my high school was not accredited and had to get a GED. I lost out on 2 semesters of financial aid and education because no one there seems to know what they are doing. I also had a 0 balance after paying for my fall semester only to see now there is a new $300 balance. WHAT IS GOING ON THERE? Do people on staff need to go back to college to learn financial business, hope they dont apply here!!! I am a single mom trying to better myself and financial aid is everything to me.

Admissions

When I chose to send my transcript to another college, I was appalled when I was asked to pay TEN DOLLARS for a transcript that simply contained by name, student ID number, and current enrollment status. I am a freshman, and have YET to complete any classes. Therefore, my transcript does not contain any actual grades yet. When I chose to have the transcript mailed instead, the woman in the office failed to inform me that it would take 3-5 business (yes, Georgia Highlands is a business, not an educational institution) days for my request to process, when I needed it sent by the next day. In turn, my transcript was late getting sent, and it will take nearly 4 more WEEKS to get my transcript processed by this college. Thanks, Georgia Highlands!

Bad Experiences with Financial Aid

First: They don't communicate well with the student body and they have no idea what they are doing.

Second: They've lost my paperwork three times in one month and then told me something completely different had to be turned in, only to be too late for me to get financial aid for the semester.

The Financial Aid office is inept and needs to be overhauled with people who are nice and communicate well, not people who get snotty when they can't do their job right. It's enough to cause this student to seek out a new school far away from this ineffectual nightmare.
