Thelma & Louise

I only like two Ridley Scott films (yes, he is terribly overrated) but those two I absolutely adore -- Alien and Thelma & Louise.

You know...

I have to agree that "Gladiator" is indeed an highly over-rated film. And there must be something other than "Aliens" and "Blade Runner" that help sing the praise of Ridley Scott's greatness. But really thinking about it, I couldn't find one. A quick peek at IMDB should have settled this issue, but to my surprise, that didn't help either. All of his movies, since "Alien" and "Blade Runner", I found to be just "ok" or "not so great". Not one movie jumps out the way "Alien" and "Blade Runner" does.

Can it be possible that Ridley Scott is becoming an over-rated director?

Glossy Ridley

What a list. I think these movies are equally dull.
Gladiator, a silly heavy handed picture, bloated with talk of "the dream of rome" - horrible soundtrack. Black Hawk Down only has the cinematic perfection going for it but is painfully patriotic and full of dumb dialogues. The rest of the list is totally forgettable, except Thelma and Louise with its National Park Postcard Shots.
Alien and Blade Runner stand out as the chiseled work of a hungry director, not a high gloss advertiser. Take these movies out and see how related the brothers Scott are.

Legend anyone?

Not only do I think "Gladiator" is not his best, I'd put it as his worst, and probably one of the most over-rated movies I've ever seen. I can't stand the movie, and I cannot throw enough Van-perbole at it. As for his best? Perhaps "White Squall" (I actually forgot he directed that, but it is quite good). Of course, I'll also always hold a nostalgia pick for "Legend". I mean, Tim Curry as the Devil?! How can you beat that?

Well.....

Actually, I think Matchstick Men is much better than Alien and probably better than Blade Runner. *Runs for the hills*

Filmography

I didn't realize until now that I've never really looked at Scott's total body of work before. I'd always thought of him just as a serious filmmaker on the level of Scorsese (well, a couple notches below Scorsese, but still up there). But beyond Blade Runner and Alien, I don't think he's made another truly great film. Gladiator, Thelma & Louise and Matchstick Men were all entertaining, and I thought Black Hawk Down was good, but I wouldn't call any of them masterpieces. Maybe he's more like Tony than I thought...
