Ridley Scott

Hey thanks for reminding me about Legend Dara. What a beautiful and engaging film that was I had completely forgotten it was a Ridley Scott film. As for A Good Year, the least said about that one the better - appalling.

A Good Year

I actually liked hislast Russell Crowe team-up, 2006's "A Good Year". It got some decent reviews and when I caught it on DVD, I was pleasantly surprised by it. It's an unconventional "guy flick" with some great performances. It's great to see actors enjoying their roles and that's what I see Crowe doing here.

I also like "White Squall" and I'll go on record saying that Scott's BIGGEST MISFIRE was "Hannibal" (a movie that never shoulda been made where we find that Hannibal Lector is just not as scary when he's not behind bars).

No Blade Runner?

I guess Blade Runner got thrown out so it wouldn't win by a landslide, but the Director's Cut of Blade Runner is probably the most meaningful and analyzable film ever made. Ever.

Legend

I would go with Legend. The film drips with style, and while the story is fairytale simple, Curry's performance as the Prince of Darkness and the set design all more than make up for it. Amazingly well done.

Kingdom of Heaven: Director's Cut

Did people forget about the director's cut of the film? While I enjoyed the theatrical one, I couldn't help notice story and pacing problems all over the place.

Then I saw the Director's Cut and it blew me away. I think it's much better than the theatrical, and even better than Gladiator.

So my vote goes for Kingdom of Heaven, but more specifically, the director's cut.

Other...

Legend. Has there been a scarier Satan in any film?

other

Since I can't choose "none of the above" I guess Other will have to do. I do love Tim Curry in Legend, but don't think it is a great movie overall. The only other two I like are Alien and Blade Runner.

Excluding films

The fact that we must exclude Blade Runner and Alien makes this survey moot...
that being said, I thought The Duellists was a beautiful film.

gladiator - am I the only one who hates it?

Some day someone will manage to explain why I should like Gladiator. I may just be getting old but for me action which is cut so fast that it (a) becomes virtually incomprehensible and (b) subjugates meaning [such as character development] to flashy CGI is just boring. Add pretentiosness and pomposity and you have the typical Ridley Scott movie of recent years. Gladiator is just the worst.

Kingdom of Heaven

I would have to agree with Cutshaw in every respect. I too would have placed Black Hawk Down in first place, but then I saw the Director's Cut of Kingdom of Heaven. That is now, in my opinion, Ridley's best film (possibly tied with Blade Runner) and easily one of the best films of the decade.

The Duellists: the first Scott is the best

If you haven't seen "The Duellists," Rideley Scott's first film, I envy you the experience of watching it for the first time. It's a period piece, and as Wikipedia relates....

"Set during the Napoleonic Wars, it features two French Hussar officers, D'Hubert and Feraud (played by Keith Carradine and Harvey Keitel). Their quarrel over an initially minor incident turns into a bitter, long-drawn out struggle over the following fifteen years, interwoven with the larger conflict that provides its backdrop. At the beginning, Feraud is the one who jealously guards his honor.... As the story progresses, D'Hubert also finds himself caught up in the contest, unable to back down or walk away.

Ridley Scott

My choice would have been Black Hawk Down, and when I saw the theatrical cut of Kingdom of Heaven it was one of my 10 worst films for that year.
But the full Director's Cut is a completely different animal, and it's a shame that so many film lovers never watched it. For me it ranks as Scott's greatest achievement and one of the Top 10 films of the Decade.
