Twinkies can last several million years without going bad. During World War II, they changed the filling from banana to the current so-called "Vanilla cream". They used a cover story that bananas were in short supply during the war so they had to make the switch. The real story is that the "vanilla cream" filling, which contains neither vanilla or cream, was a chemical byproduct that was accidentally discovered during the Manhattan Project. Initially there was a stability problem with the mixture and the occasional Twinkie would collapse it's mass, creating a tiny black hole. These little black holes would suck in everything in a 60' radius for a day or so before dying off. Luckily, in 1947 a "weather balloon" consisting an alien spacecraft and crew crashed at Roswell. While studying the craft, technology was discovered that not only allowed Twinkies to be stabilized but reduced the per unit cost for production. The extra profit allowed Hostess to advertise during the Howdy Doody Show and the rest is history. They sell over half a billion a year. Interesting side note - The damaged levies in New Orleans were repaired with donated Twinkies deemed defective by Hostess. Twinkies are considered defective when they are broken, the wrong size or radioactive. The Twinkies were mixed with Sam's Choice fruitcakes left over from the previous holiday season. The resulting mixture is estimated to be over 8 times stronger than concrete. Officials say the areas repaired with the Twinkie/fruitcake mixture will last long after oceans rise and put the city under 40 feet of water, some time in the next 100 years. |
