RE: 6 Dollar Gas

Are you kidding me? The meteoric rise of gas prices can be directly attributed to the Bush administation's policy debacle in the Middle East. From 1980-early 2003, just before the Iraq invasion, the price of crude oil hovered steadily at around $25 a barrel. As of June 6th, 2008, the price of a barrel of crude oil is at $138.03 and expected to rise unhindered for the forseeable future. It doesn't take a genius to draw the conclusion that this is no coincidence. Your irresponsible assertion that this is somehow the fault of Democrats is not only ridiculous, but also unfounded and undocumented. If you're going to post lies, at least try and make them sound plausible by giving reasons for your opinions.

RE: 6 Dollar Gas

I am not going to do your thinking for you as you so entitlement mindedly insist. There is no debacle. Only your minority view has misconstrued what a debalce is. The price is going up on purpose to squeeze those that support the democrats and I am one that thinks it is great that you have to pay more. And the fact you earn less is due to the lowered standards of education and vocation for liberals. Only got yourselves to blame. Can't wait till it goes to 7 dollars a gallon.

RE: 6 Dollar Gas

You're both wrong. The reason is a combination of demand growth, mainly from developing nations, and no additional production capacity to meet upswing in demand. Cheap oil in the past made it cost prohibitive to invest in new oil production, because the return on investment was too low. High prices are beginning to crimp demand, and spur new investment into renewables. Oil is a dead end street. We need to change our way of thinking, or leave this problem until we have to go 'Mad Max', with no fallback plan.

RE: 6 Dollar Gas

TWO GO IN, ONE COMES OUT.
WELCOME TO THUNDERDOME!
I look forward to the Mad Max scenario!

Seriously though, to think that the price of oil increasing is some great scam by the American left is a bit problematic. In all likelyhood higher oil/gas prices are a result of anti-American sentiment in the mid-east coupled with the desire by the last thriving industry in the bad economy testing how far they can push the market.

I think the fact that the Bush family is in bed with Big Oil/Energy is hardly a contested fact. (See NY Times Article at: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9F0DE4DF1739F933A05755C0A 9669C8B63&sec=&spon=&pagewanted=3)

What is tragic about all of this is that the push on the price per barrel along with tax breaks for the wealthy and the rest of Bush/McCain's policy initiatives screw all Americans in the bottom 99% while somehow convincing at least 50% of them that they are working with their best interests at heart or worse, convincing them that abortion, gay marriage and immigration are bigger issues than the economy.

May Obama win and may he win big. Viva la revolucion.

RE: 6 Dollar Gas

Well, it depends, there are many factors.

1.) The soft dollar
2.) Increased global demand
3.) People who buy futures think oil is going to be worth more in the future so they are willing to buy futures at higher prices
4.) Lack of refining capacity in America
5.) Nobody is really willing to change their lifestyles
6.) Middle class people own big oil and hope to retire someday(only 1.5% of Big Oil stock is owned by "Big Oil," the rest is primarily held by retirement funds and pensions, mainly for the middle class.
7.) After most of the oil industry lost their shirts in the 80s they are a little gun shy and are preparing for the next oil price crash. (if only home owners had done that)
8.)They like making a reasonable profit for the volume of buisness (9-11% profits, on almost half a trillion dollars in buisness).
9.) Lack of domestic drilling. Its all clear for China to drill off our coast though.
10.) NIMBY jerks. An offshore windfarm was not built in MA because it would have interfered with Uncle Teddy Kennedy's sailing.
11.) Lack of Domestic Refining
12.) Because Profitable companies hire people, and pay them well.
13.) Boutique fuel blends are expensive to make and transport
14.) Here is a fun note, the increase in agribuisness to support our new ethanol fuel blends has created a deadzone at the base of mississippi. Nothing says progress like ecological disaster.

Of course there is the flip side of the coin for all the big oil sucks people:
1.) A texas oilman is erecting a 2700 turbine windfarm in texas
2.) Hybrids by pretty much every manufacturer
3.) The Chevy Volt
4.) Mercury spill light bulbs
5.) More efficient appliances
6.) Vespa's
7.) Local Produce
8.) Professional racing is adopting alternative fuels (ALMS anyway)

It's quite a surprise to see someone here that understands the situation exactly. Well done. Unfortunately the members of Idiocracy that normally post here are going to be confused by all the words, say you talk like a fag, and go back to their red vs. blue BS.

RE: 6 Dollar Gas

Jacob stop posing as a fan of yourself. j/k. Actually you are right in the sense that there are many factors that go into the price of oil. Obviously "Bush is evil" or "Democrats are bad" are not reasonable explanations. It is a sad state of affairs right now. I don't own a car, I use public transportation & the price of gas is still affecting me financially. I am surprised though because most people I know, while complaining about the cost of a fill-up at the gas station, haven't really modified their behavior any... I guess when it get up to a certain level people will stop being able to go on with business as usual.

RE: 6 Dollar Gas

Speaking of which, how many people will pay like $5.00 for a COFFEE at Starbucks, and gripe about the price of gas while waiting on line?

When it comes to prioritizing and modifying lifestyles, we're generally pretty bad at it.
