Totally forgot about "Dave" probably the best presidential comedy. It is a toss up between Dave and Wag the Dog.

The Candidate -- One of the best ever

For those who have not seen it, check out "The Candidate," an absolutely classic (not to mention highly entertaining) 1972 film with prime-time era Robert Redford in the lead role as a somewhat reluctant liberal senatorial candidate who gets swept up in the political machine and zeitgeist. Here's a movie where Redford's great looks, charm, and likeable screen presence are crucial to the film's message about the sale-ability and telegenic necessity of candidates, as well as a commentary about the ways in which belief systems are tested, compromised, shaped, challenged, and abandoned in pursuit of power and victory. technically not about a presidential run, but an essential work on the themes and elements that govern presidential politics that is still relevant today. Plus, Peter Boyle is in it -- always a plus -- and the excellent actor who plays the Republican incumbent is deliciously condescending to his young challenger. Seriously superb viewing.

My pick is The Contender, starring Joan Allen. Probably the most realistic of all movies dealing with the nomination/election process. And frankly, I cannot understand why the movie Air Force One is so popular. What an unbelievable piece of crap - anyone who thinks you can hang suspended from a jet as in the film needs to go back to science class. Utterly ridiculous!
