Slumdogging Slumdog

The MPAA rating on 'Slumdog' was the biggest turkey. Bad movies come and go. Bad ratings on good movies are unforgiveable. This is almost as egregious of the PG-13 rating the MPAA slapped on "Whale Rider" for a single barely noticeable drug reference.

As for Indiana Jones, why all the hate? Yes, it was preposterous, but what did we expect from a franchise that brought us the melting Nazi and the heart-removing witch doctor? I found it much less offensive than the insufferably faux-philosophical 'The Last Crusade' and thought it actually had more laughs than any of the films since 'Raiders'. C'mon, maneating ants? That's gold!

Expectations

I think it comes down to expectations. Did anybody expect The Love Guru or Meet Dave to be good movies? And, as much talent as DeNiro and Pacino possess, it was pretty clear what to expect out of Righteous Kill. So, even though the inconsistency of the MPAA ratings board is unfortunate, the epic failure of Indiana Jones 4 was by far the most disappointing thing from 2008.

This Week's Poll

The biggest disappointment this year at the cineplex HAD to be the Indiana Jones disaster. I have one word... YIPES!

MPAA

I agree with the earlier writer - MPAA not only for Slum Dog, but their overall ratings. they have also not been consistent over the years. For Example Breakfast Club and 16 Candles are rated "R" because they have Teenager Mischief (Teenagers talking about sex and drugs), but Ghost Busters and Out of Africa are Rated "PG" because the sexual references are made by adults.

Slum Dogs got a "R" and Quantum of Solace a "PG-13" - there is something wrong with the system.

Al and Bob

This "Pumping Iron" scene set me up to find things funny throughout the movie. I expected to see Starsky and Hutch walk around the corner several times.

"Turkey Poll"

After going through all the movies I have seen this year (25-30) I have to conclude that with a few exceptions (movie's I liked, but other people might not have) I think that this was a real 'turkey year for movies. So much hype and expectations, so little payoff. Films I (and I stress 'I') liked included "Tell No One"," In Bruges", "City of Men", "Forgetting Sarah Marshall"," Chris and Don; A Love Story", "My Winnipeg" (thanks guys) "Mamma Mia!" (yes, yes I know but still...), "Man on Wire", "Rachel Getting Married", and "Changeling" The rest I didn't like at all (I'm looking at you Ben Stiller and Seth Rogan!), were very disappointing or just plain dumb. (I love you James McAvoy, but please no more "Taken") Hoping some adult movies will show up for end of year awards race

pumping iron

Although "Biggest Turkey" had some tough competition on your poll. Ultimately I had to vote for Al & Robert's over the top, macho-bravado filled opening sequence. At the end of the day "they" should know better.

tsk tsk.

Lucas/Spielberg Hating

The difference between The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and the other three Indiana Jones movies is that you get a chance to warm up to the characters in the first three. Here so much is thrown at the audience that you have no time to warm up to anyone, not even Indy. The villains also weren't particularily villainous and didn't really seem all that bad. You also have to ask yourself, if Indy hadn't shown up, would the outcome for the bad guys been any different? It was just lazy storytelling if you ask me. Yes, I blame both Steven Spielberg and George Lucas for this disappointing effort. Why oh why did they give Frank Darabont the boot?

lucas hating

I'll slit my own throat here and defend Indiana Jones. I enjoyed it because I went in expecting Indiana Jones and that was what I got. I really don't understand what everybody has against the alien aspect. Was everyone really expecting him to look for a Bible relic with Nazis chasing him again? I don't think it's the best of the four, but it doesn't deserve the bashing it gets on all the podcasts. And come up with something better than Lucas and aliens. Describe something specific you hate. Also, acknowledge that Spielberg did make this movie, too. So if you hate it, share the blame with him, rather than creating some fiction about how Lucas controlled absolutely everything that you hate about it and Spielberg was the only reason why any of it was tolerable. Is anyone else not tired of this blind Lucas bashing? I was sick of hearing it 8 years ago, myself.

MPAA

I voted for the MPAA, not just for Slumdog Millionaire, but because of their long history of ****ing **** up.

Righteous KIll

I'd take the opening credits of RK over any recent Eddie Murphy or Mike Myers flick...Priceless.

Summer Comedies

While I wouldn't hold this summer as a banner year for comedies, several of the comedies mentioned did not suck.

In particular, I really did love Step Brothers and Tropic Thunder, and enjoyed the action/comedy mix of Pineapple Express and Get Smart.

The less said about Love Guru and Zohan the better, though.

Toughy

One of the toughest opinion polls yet, guys. I pondered this for a good 10 minutes, but had to go with Al and Bob pumping iron... But if you had put The Clone Wars up there it wouldn't even have been close.

turkey time!!

it was close...

but indy 4: 'the phantom menace' takes the gold for me, closely followed by pineapple express - i think i will be actively avoiding any project associated with seth rogan from now on
