| Posted By: Joe Petersen Posted On: Nov 25, 2008 Views: 293 | "Green Lanes" It's going to be a rough couple of years putting up with all the new "fads" that will be unleashed as a result of the country's lurch to the left. I can't wait until 2010. Just like we did in the first general election after Clinton was elected, we will no doubt have to step in and stop the magical thinking and put the country back on back on course. Let them have their nonsensical fun. |
| Posted By: Bee Posted On: Nov 24, 2008 Views: 299 | Latest joke from Gov Blahblah What a joke! On expressways and highways, drivers are to stay right except to pass, right? In the two years this has been law, I have never seen anyone ticketed for staying in the left lane, even when the traffic density is low. I will cross to green and then back just before passing under the Gov Blahblah tollroad sign. Then back to green. The police don't enforce the stay right, except to pass or the light on when raining, so do we really expect tickets for this. Don't think so. |
| Posted By: RegularGuy Posted On: Nov 23, 2008 Views: 326 | Smoke and Mirrors Two things reduce congestion on tollways - more lanes or fewer cars. We aren't going to see either any time soon, so all these HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) lanes do is shift traffic around - kind of like a shell game. The difference in this shell game is that there is no chance the public will ever win. |
| Posted By: Henry Posted On: Nov 22, 2008 Views: 157 | Carpool Lanes This is another bad idea by our governor to make his legacy anything but failure and corruption. Its' an idea he could make and implement since the Toll Highway Authority is run by a board entirely appointed by him (as in if they want to keep getting checks for attending meeting they had better carry his water). The troubled state budget isn't involved since the money comes directly from each our tolls. He does have examples he uses to indicate assured success ... in Minnesota. I've sat on the crowded expressways of Virginia headed into Washington DC during a rush hour. The traffic barely moves, except for the occasional vehicle speeding past all of the others in the HOV lane. It certainly crosses your mind that if all of that traffic could use the HOV lane it was bound to be better. Now, in Illinois, I understand that Gov Blago has an improvement in the Virginia operation. In Illinois you will be able to BUY your way into the HOV lane through greatly increased tolls. Imagine that! In Illinois if you, as an individual, give a government agency more money you can get better service. That does characterize Blago's ideas. It won't work buy, if you give them more money, you can skip around the crowd and get something going for you. |
| Posted By: Jammed Up on 355 Posted On: Nov 21, 2008 Views: 139 | Tollway carpool lanes I drive 355 end-to-end every day and have suffered through years of construction just to get three lanes open. If they take away a lane how does that make up for all the lost time during the past years of construction or reduce congestion? I drive a 4 cyl car that gets 32 mpg, I know there are plenty of hybid cars/suv's that get less, but I'll have to drive in the crowd or pay extra for the privilege just for doing what I can do today. In fact, due to the shortage of lanes, my mileage will go down (just like everyone else) due to constant start and stop and the whole concept will lead to extra consumption. I've lived in states where they do have HOV lanes (Washington) but they thought ahead and built roads with enough lanes to accommodate this concept right from the start. Overall, I think it's just another way for the tollway to charge more money and have another excuse why they have to start yet another construction project to widen (again) the roads. Just fix the nightly jam-up from 88 to Maple and leave things alone for a while! |
