Often should never have the "t" pronounced

Soften isn't pronounced "soft - ten," listen isn't "list - ten," whistle isn't "wist-tell." How did we get so lazy in our pronunciation? I blame "Hooked on Phonics."

Actually both ways of pronouncing often are acceptable. Both are listed in the dictionary.
