Tennis

....Although I do at times take in an Ultimate Fight, I prefer Tennis.

....I do not like accepting violence as the norm, but again I am guilty for watching it.

We have enough violence in the world.

RE: Tennis

I imagine being first would be like hitting an overhead smash in tennis, but I'm second which is more like just hitting a really good serve.

RE: Tennis

I would rather play tennis but not watch it, instead watch ultimate fighting. Tennis is a little slow to watch, in my humble opinion.

p.s. CAKE come to Atlanta on next tour!

Not much of a tennis fan.....

I practice Tae Kwon Do so I like to watch the fighting techniques, but there is no Do or Way in UFC style fighting. Most of the fighters are poor examples of martial artist. Someday one of them will die and there will be rules changes. I actually saw a kickboxing match were someone died.
The ignorance shown on the "ultimate fighter" show is very disturbing.

"kickboxing match were someone died"

Did the rules change after that?

What martial arts do you feel are represented poorly in the sport of MMA?

RE: Tennis

No rules change but an event that had been held for over a decade has not been held since. It did not have the exposure of someone dying in the UFC. Martial arts is not about prize fighting or just beating the hell out of someone! Most of the fighters do not have a true MA attitude. GSP is one of the few who does. MA is for learning about oneself, physical fitness, self defence, ect. UFC is all tecnique and hype, no real substance, just fighting. The only thing I see that is remotly MA is technique and a few fighters who are martial artist.

I forgot to add the death was caused by the officials not the rules.

I wrote this a couple months ago:

I was at a fight were a kickboxer died.

The guy was out on his feet and they stopped the fight for over 5 min. to retie his gloves. I was in the front row and complained loadly as this was the main event and I had been indulging in a refreshing alchoholic beverage(s). The fight continued and both fighters had so much heart! They beat the out of each other. Later that night he went into a coma and died a few days later. Really sucked since he was a last minuite (less than a weeks notice) replacement for another fighter. It was a very good fight and the fighter who died was only slightly less skilled than the local champ. This annual MA demo, karate points fighting, kickboxing event had been going for many years and this was the first time I had gone. After his death they cancled all future events.
Real martial arts are made to inflict injury and kill, even with the restrictive rules, eventually someone will die. It will be interesting how the UFC will handle this.

RE: Tennis

My first fight, I was in 5th. Grade and I broke a kids jaw. A family friend lived next door to us and owned a Jujutsu/Boxing Gym. Everyday after school he taught me self-defense and also taught only stike to defend. I still remember the kid's name, Del. He was a bully and always pushed kids around. I remember he had a wife beater shirt on that day. He was also muscular and intimidating.
After recess one day, we were walking back to class and out of nowhere he came up behind me and pushed me to the ground. I got up and did nothing and proceeded to walk, he then got in front of me and gave me a face slap. I just remember reacting with a left jab to chest and a right cross to left jaw/face.
Next thing I know, he's on the ground screaming. His jaw broke in 2 places. No one from that school ever messed with me again.

My parents were informed by the school, Del's parents, and local police. After interviewing all witnesses, no charges were filed.

RE: Tennis

So in individual MA tournaments where the artists fight to win the tournament.. that's not also focusing mainly on their technique and in some cases, hype?

It is about attitude. Prize fighting is not traditional MA.

Ultimate Fighter

Tennis... too easy; people always whining that you hit the ball too fast or too hard. Especially people who play tennis.
It's an intense, fun sport but it just doesn't cut it.
In the end there will be two types of people, those who fight and those who cower.
Take up fighting and prepare yourself.

RE: Tennis

Technique should be the focus of a traditional tournaments. Technique is the reason I watch MMA.
I am a TKD martial artist and to fight at tournaments was one of the requirements for my black belt test. We fight according to age weight and skill level. We also wear protection on our bodies, head, arms and feet. A well place TKD kick can kill or cause permanent damage.
Ego should play no part in traditional sparring/fighting.
MMA is a sport not a martial art. In fact many combat arts called martial arts are not true "Military Arts". Judo or "the gentle way" is a sport invented by Jigaro Kano as a way to practice Japanese JuJutsu with rules.

"Technique should be the focus of a traditional tournaments"

Glad you cleared that up. For a second there I thought you were trying to say that technique is not at the forefront of any 'fighting' tournament.
The 'majority' of all MMA practitioners are owners of high ranking belts in one or multiple martial arts disciplines. So in that respect., they are just like yourself or any other martial artist.

So in identifying your issue.. we are left with just the sport of MMA itself. Tell me, what is the difference between an MMA tournament and the annual World Jiu-Jitsu Championship? Or how about the world championship of Muay Thai, kick boxing, boxing, wrestling, etc? Plenty of money is passed around with all of these.. cash prizes or through sponsorship.
