Nostalgia

I too, came across this poem in Anne of Green Gables, and could never find it any anthology. I had no idea it was written by Caroline Norton. She wrote it to keep body and soul together, in the days when women had no rights or prospects other than in marriage. It is wonderful to be able to Google such things.

Bingen on the Rhine

This poem is mentioned in Anne of Green Gables. Gilbert recites it, and when he comes to the part 'There's another, not a sister' he looks right at Anne (as reported by Diana). I've always wanted to know what the poem was about - and now I know!

This is my favourite poem in "The Home Book of Poetry" I have which belonged to my great-grandmother. It has always been very special to me.

Poetry of Lady Caroline Norton

Her portrait hangs in Pollok House ,Glasgow and when I asked who it was couldn't believe after all this time of seeing the poet my father often quoted . The poem he loved to quote was "Bingen on the Rhine".
What a woman she was.

Bingen of the Rhine

As I was growing up my mother used to recite parts of this poem to me, I liked it then and I like it now, it reminds me of my mother's eloquence and greatness.
