Waiting on Palm Pre maybe!

I went to the sprint store to get my first blackberry and I heard about the palm pre so I did some research and yes it looks lovely. I won't wait more than a month if there is no date by mid May I will check out the BB. Funny thing is I saw a sprint commercial yesterday with a palm pre in it! Whats the deal, give us a date already!

Sprint exclusivity contract

Anyone know the duration of Palm's exclusivity contract with Sprint? I hope Sprint paid dearly for this because there's no question it will cost Palm millions in early sales.

I'm excited about the Pre, but really disappointed that I can't jump on it yet. My carrier is ATT and they're the only one with G3 coverage where I need it on a daily basis. Since they also partner with Apple, I suspect my only hope will be for an unlocked GSM version of the Pre.

My Treo650 is still kicking after almost 5 years. I just hope it lasts until I finally have a viable alternative.

Sprint is a mistake

I've been using Palm products since the mid-90's and been hanging onto my Treo 700P until the new "Nova" OS was unveiled. I have to say for as impressed I was with the Pre, I was very disappointed to see Palm partnered with Sprint to offer this phone exclusively. Why? Well, Consumer Reports recently had an issue in which they review cell phones and service providers. Sprint was at the bottom of the list -- and mostly THE BOTTOM -- of surveys of users in just about every major city in the US.

So even if the Pre phone is really good as indicated in the newsletter. How can you tell if the service is really bad?

If Palm wanted to really come out with an iPhone killer, they should have partnered with the right mobile service provider...like a Verizon (which, incidentally, was at the top of the lists on just about every major city in the same CR article.)

Palm just doesn't have the brand recognition Apple has and picking the right provider should have been such a critical factor to consider. Given the amount of time they've made us wait, I don't get how they could have screwed this part up so badly.

Outlook

I'm eagerly awaiting Pre, but if it does not sync with outlook on my desktop, it's a nonstarter. My Treo 680 with Datebk works extremely well with outlook so that I have all the information I need at my fingertips whether I'm at my computer or not.

Must haves:
* Sophisticated calendar that syncs with outlook, understands timezones, etc. (DateBk6 is still the gold standard.)
* Integrated contacts (with lots of email and phone contact options) that syncs with Outlook
* Diverse messaging with txt, email, & IM
* Rich web
* Rich assortment of 3rd party apps
* Google maps
* 1 full day life under reasonable use without recharging.
* Must charge via USB.
* GSM, preferably T-Mo or unlocked since AT&T is unacceptable
* I'm not personally a push email addict, but know some will consider it a deal breaker if it is not available.

Sprint Pre

I switched to Sprint from AT&T, and happily paid a $250.00 fee to get out of my contract. AT&T's service and support was absolutely horrendous here in South Florida. Sprint has been good to great over the past year, and my Centro has been good, but not perfect, and more than a little "dated" feeling. I'm eagerly awaiting the Pre, as I've been a Palm guy for fifteen years or so.

So when the Pre comes out, I'll be switching, as long as I can port my current apps over. If Palm doesn't port the old apps to the Pre, I'm afraid the Pre will not make it.

Oh and Honestly I hate the name Pre, it's just bad.
They should have rebooted the Pilot name for the new device.

Pre as known now is non-starter

The Pre as configured now is a non-starter for me.

Sprint is not an option, as its quality in this area is poor compared to both Verizon and ATT, and I travel out of the country too much and therefore require GSM.

I have a great deal of confidential information on my Treo. I am unwilling to sync with the clouds. I don't even want to sync my non-confidential personal data via the clouds. Internet repositories have yet to prove to me they have enough security to prevent identity theft. In fact, they have yet to prove to me they are serious enough about identity theft with regard to their internal operational rules. If I can't sync directly to my computers, via wire or bluetooth, at this point, the phone is a no go.

With regard to the sync problem with the Pre, Palm has the preeminent PIM in the Palm desktop. I haven't a clue why they are abandoning it. This makes no sense to me. I would think continuing to utilize it could be a big plus for Palm, especially if they would update it with more features such as the ability to see the messages and email on your phone via the desktop.

Palm Pre

RE: Whorfin's statement, early adopters, and Treonauts tend to be so, are not so price sensitive. But I won't switch to Sprint. The poll numbers are informative with respect to Treonauts.

Poll pointless without pricing info

Until we know how much the Pre will cost, this poll is utterly pointless - except for those polled for whom price is not a factor (which is true for very, very few consumers).

Palm Pre

I concur with Z. Fairbank, I'm a Mac user, and the Pre needs to work seamlessly with it, so I may have to regrettably wait until Apple releases the new iPhone...

Palm Pre

Your survey neglected to include "already with Sprint but waiting until Pre has proven itself".
