Having been in this industry for over 25 years since graduation, I've seen it decline and plummet through these past 7 years of unsteady employment. Since 2001, I've been out of work more than I've been working, as Europe and the Far East continue to blow us away technologically as well as in volume of boats/ships designed and built. A student at a major US engineering college told me a couple of years ago that he planned to look for work in Europe on graduation for lack of opportunities in the US. I'd be doing the same were it not for my aged ailing mother needing my care - and the jobs here in the Northeast have declined from spotty to nonexistent since the 1980s. What will it take to turn things around? Can they be turned around? Does anyone even care anymore?

That said, I would rather see money go to ship builders and the marine industry than to bonuses for the economic saboteurs who got us into this mess! The huge amounts in the stimulus bill for the Corps and Waterways is long overdue and is real infrastructure investment
