arm merchant ship

i won't think this help by giving arms to crew and trained,bçoz now pirates know that merchant vsl are not carrying any special trained people with arm,but when they come to know that crew are carrying arms then they will find some another way and which can be more disaster for merchant vsl like tankers or gass carrier.

How about selective ambush

One deterrent would be along the lines of "society is safer when criminals don't know who is armed". In addition to all the other ideas here, bait pirates occasionally with a ship that looks lucrative and helpless but is actually lethal. Also take no prisoners.

Arming Merchant Mariners

while I agree that selected crew members should be trained and have small arms available, this should be a "belt and suspenders" action. I think the more effective primary approach would be to have armed security forces aboard vessels in dangerous areas. The resources of each government would be better spent providing members of their armed forces to act as security on merchant ships subject to piracy than to waste the effort trying to patrol and secure huge areas of ocean on warships alone. Furthermore, it sounds harsh and unfair towards the brave military personel who would be the security detail, but human nature says having armed security as a separate entity would provide a measure of "immunity" and protection towards the crew members on a vessel in the event a pirate attack is successful.

Arm Merchant Ships? Not so much long term

I believe that there should be some personnel that are armed and trained. We already have some personnel aboard planes, why not some of our ships. Maybe we should also look into building some of these countries so they can battle and prevent such attacks. It shouldn't always be about a war with anyone that comfronts us butu on how to resolve it for the future. What can we do futuristically. Arming will only solve the problem for now, training and developing these countries to battle this with only be a stepping stone into the future.

Arm Merchant Mariners

Absolutely should arm key personnel. Those personnel should complete an approved small arms course like that at Little Creek, Virginia. Good course, great instructors and facility.

NO OTHER CHOICE

With navies stretched to the limit and practicing "catch and release" we need to put effective countermeasures on board ship.

Guns are effective countermeasures. Best would be for them to be carried by service personnel. Next best qualified private security contractors. Arming mariners is a poor third choice, but may well be necessary
