Meeting sites

What is this mania for meeting in the South in August? If I'm going to leave paradise-for-only-three-months Montana in August, it's not going to be for foul humid places like DC, Orlando, Birmingham, or Austin. If we must meet in the south now and then (and probably we do to make meetings accessible to members in those areas), then please, please move the meeting to October. Even better, have it in October all the time and leave my summer free!

SAA should note that some of the best-attended meetings *ever* were Denver (2000) and San Francisco (2008).

Yes, the 1997 meeting in Orlando was at a Disney hotel. It was beyond awful. As a young professional who couldn't afford the conference hotel (I believe that was the first in our series of $200 +/night hotels), I found I had the world's greatest networking tool: a car. When people found out that I could get them Out Of There, I always had someone to visit with at lunch or dinner.

Not Orlando in August!

Please, for the love of whatever gods you hold dear, think of how unbearably hot Orlando would be in August.

Vote Nashville! While the archives community isn't as large there as some of the other places on the list, it's within a day's driving distance for a lot of other cities - not true for BC or Portland, however nice they might be.

DC, Chicago, Philly & Orlando

Sorry for leaving Philly off the list. I kicked myself when the first person posted a comment.

As I'm sure the article in "AO" will explain, they are now negotiating multi-year contracts with hotels in DC (and maybe Chicago) which gives them more leverage for negotiating better rates. Also the DC meeting is always very well attended, etc. So that's why they're going back there again. Same may be true of Chicago. I don't know about that.

I didn't go the last Orlando meeting but I heard some people had problems with the whole Disney thing. (Did they meet at a Disney hotel?) Sounds ok to me. Probably also cheap flights.

duh...THE ILLADELPH

This is total homerism, but where the heck is Philadelphia in your predetermined list?

I was certain that Philly would have been chosen for next year's east coast conference. Kinda bummed it's not coming around here. It would have been fun to entertain you all.

DC again? And then DC three years after that? Not inspired choices.

The place I would love to have it is Portland. As I understand it, the city is small and walkable. And I'd love to visit Reed College. Boston would be fun, too. It's, like, almost as cool as Philly.

I love Portland (OR, but Maine is pretty, too). Miami would be nice. having just done our regional in Alaska, I can vouch for Anchorage. I just think that we can move around a little better and maybe lower costs a little bit if we stop thinking we have to put 1000 people in one hotel with all the conference amenities there too.

Next two cities are DC and then Chicago, by the way (2010 and 2011). Next two years' destinations have not been announced, then we're back in DC for 2014.

The Other

While I voted for two Northwest cities to which I've always wanted to go, the "Other" I checked off is really a general desire for more reasonably priced cities to be thrown into the mix, places like Minneapolis or Toronto. I also think Detroit could be surprisingly good.

I understand why it's desirable to have the conference in a single hotel, but SAA really seems to have outgrown that model size-wise. People getting locked out of sessions due to space limitations as they were in Boston or SF would suggest that. Of course, that point may be moot for awhile because so many institutions have cut staff travel these days - in person attendance is probably going to go way down for a few years - but revisiting the model would open up a lot more possibilities for host cities.

WHERE SHOULD SAA GO NEXT?

My first choice is Boston: I want SAA to meet as often as possible in jurisdictions that treat *all* of their citizens equally under the law. Plus, Boston is a great city and is home to a fantastic network of archivists. No shortage of repository tours there! (Vancouver -- and Toronto or Montreal -- would also fit the bill, but some members would doubtless object to meeting outside of the U.S., and crossing the border is becoming ever more of a hassle.)

I chose Vegas because SAA has never met there and because the collapse of Vegas tourism might make a Vegas meeting a real bargain.

For purely selfish reasons, I would like to see SAA meet in New York City. It would be phenomenally expensive, I'm sure, but I think it would be a popular choice. Moreover, NYC certainly has the facilities to accommodate us.

Finally, I would like to see SAA return to New Orleans. Those of us who went to SAA in 2005 had the heartbreaking good fortune of savoring the city right before disaster struck, and I vividly recall the pride and graciousness with which all of the New Orleans archivists greeted us. New Orleans is still struggling, and I would love to see SAA inject some cash into the local economy.

Big Cities

Just an FYI, SAA did a study a year or so ago to find cities that have conference hotels big enough to accommodate our annual meetings in the traditional fashion (i.e. the conference and most attendees staying in the same venue). It turns out that there just aren't that many, maybe a couple dozen, and many mid-size cities don't fit the bill. The main office is working on some communication that explains the process they take in selecting sites, most likely to be published in the next issue of Archival Outlook. Be on the lookout.
