negative image portrayal of Jamaica

I do believe we are justified in reacting the way we do about these depiction of Jamaica in media. Not because we do not agree that we have these things happening in Jamaica but it seem as if we are being targeted for a beating down. The more we do well internationally the more some people try to beat us down and highlight the worst of us. What is more alarming is that we as Jamaicans are being singled out in the Caribbean for bad treatment. i live in another island and the locals have a love hate relationship with us THEY LIKE EVERYTHING JAMAICAN EXCEPT JAMAICANS.One of their biggest product as a tourist destination is BRAND JAMAICA and BOB MARLEY.
There is only one thing that is certain though and that is if we could get a good handle on crime in Jamaica people from within this region would be flocking the shores of Jamaica to get a piece of our cultural life. We are the cultural icon of the region. People trying to put a lick on BIG BAD JAMAICA cause to some extent they fear something. Our pride ant stature could be boosted a thousand folds had it not been for crime at all levels. Our full pride would bloom

I really think that we are being treated unfairly as Jamaicans, whether at home or abroad by the international Medias. There are worst crimes being committed in various countries and these acts are unreported or whitewashed. I have travelled to various countries – Caribbean, North America and Europe – and the crime level there are unbelievable. Yet the Medias make it seems as if it is only Jamaica these things are happening.

I don't think Jamaicans are overeacting about the recent media attention on Jamaica. The name of the Programme was SECRETS of the Caribbean , not Crime & Violence in the caribbean . Here are some of the secrets of JA, The YS falls , Dunns River Falls , Blue Mountains , Seven Miles of beach in Negril , Reach Falls , Holland Bamboo, Maroon Town , 7 miles of winding road at Spur Tree Hill .
If a student is told to write about oranges and then write 2 sentences on oranges and 4 paragraphs on apples. That would mean the student missed the point and would deserve 2/10.
Why was Trevor McDonald showing a weed seller , he also visted the womens prison , why ?. What was the relevance. THat is not a secret, every country has women prisons . Not every country
has Fern Gully . He went to Barbadoes and showed a very good picture . Why ? So ,Jamaicans are not being petty . If the programme was on social conditions then I say fair enough.

Jamaica's Image

If what's being report is false, then Jamaicans would have the right to be upset. But, it's true. If Jamaicans don't like it, clean up your act.

Happiness and relative poverty

Jamaica may not be as wealthy as some of its anglophone neighbours, or sister states. At the same time, what Jamaica has achieved since independence a lot of other people from diverse corners of the world would be glad to experience.

Wealth is a relative concept, and is not directly related to happiness. A lot of Jamaicans in rural communities, in the past, had little, but their recollections of the experience would bend the happiness meter.

Simple things like; good neighbourliness, healthy family lives, and mutual respect for law and order (not necessarily the police, but law-abiding decency), all these go along way to creating necessary harmony.

Today, the worship of the almighty dollar, and the material comforts it is able to buy, has Jamaicans throwing lives, and morality, down the tubes.
Gunmen who now measure their self-worth in things that "moth and rust doth corrupt", which they can't take to the grave with them, believing that their lives are worth nothing, and that a fight to the death is honourable.

If Jamaicans view life as not worth living unless we are in a Mercedes Benz, or live in Cherry Gardens, or have a three-storey house, then others will view us similarly, as we proceed to beat ourselves to death in the most savage way to get to the top of the pile.

Foreign Journalists thoughts about Jamaica

For Jamaica to get out of the position it is in it needs to work harder and smarter. Journalism and newspapers appeal to a fickle society with short term memory.

Once we break a few world records and impress on the world stage we will have access to markets all over to promote brand Jamaica.

Lets "keep the main thing the main thing"

Trish is right, but there is a lot to be done.Jamaica does have its share of problems. The sad truth is there are new ones popping up...the disappearing of kids. There are, lets say, not the most honest individuals on the police force that is the root of our problems.Fix this, and half the crime in Jamaica will stop.

It is true that the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago has had its fair share of turmoil and troubles, on one occasion a coup at the Red House by the Jamaat al Muslimeen was put down with the help of the Jamaica Defence Force, traveling hundreds of miles to land in Port of Spain, the capital. Recently, some Jamaican workers who were in a certain district in Trinidad left the Republic hastily because of fear of violence, recounting that they saw gunmen walking around freely toting guns, as if there was no law enforcement.
Generally, crime and poverty, are inevitable consequences of sociology in most Caribbean territories, with varying degrees of severity, but always present.
Jamaicans should use these criticisms to better improve itself. A lot of advances have been made, that would make Jamaica better-off than its pre-independence years, such as: rural electrification; access to potable water; access to education, including adult education; and access to funding for basic housing. Any sensible person can see that we can a lot more room for improvement, particularly in the areas of: employment; quality of healthcare; reduction in crime levels; diversification of the economy, to allow for less dependence on tourism, and bauxite, as a few ideas that come to mind. This would be another stage in the process of development, for a developing economy.

EVERY COUNTRY HAS PROBLEMS . I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH TREVOR MACDONALD SINGLING OUT MY COUNTRY, WHEN HIS IS NO BETTER. I CANT STAND WHEN other countries pretend they do not have crime and drug problems, it very hypocritical. we must stop allowing these journalists to trick us, and paint bad pictures of us abroad, just to promote themselves. England has lots of issues but u will never see them being broadcast worldwide . Jamaica is doing well and has made strides in every area. Trevor Mac. as a black Caribbean man should be ashamed of himself for his report on the Caribbean as it fell far short of expectations, esp. when u take the title into consideration.. it was clearly political and backward. who does he think he is!!!
