Different Awards.

We should have different awards for lifetime service and achievement on a grand scale. I.e. That lifetime award would go to people like Father Holong (SP?) who has helped a lot of desperately poor people for many many years. While the Achievement award would go to people like Bolt who basically made the planet sit up and go: "WTF?"

This isn't a new concept by any means. In the military a soldier fresh out of basic training could charge onto the battlefield, blow up a few tanks, get shot in the leg and go home with a dozen different medals for valor etc... All without every being promoted. Meanwhile a slower less aggressive warrior can go throgh a bunch of battles and gradually make his way to general

Even more troublesome is the naming of major infrastructure after people who are walking around and able to make new mistakes. Imagine if 25 years ago, when Mugabe was as respected as Nelson Mandela, we had gone out and named a road after him. Would we rename it today or live with the shame? I say that kind of honor should be reserved for dead people.

Most troublesome of all is when awards are given out and you have to ask: "What did that guy do?" That should NEVER happen. When you give out awards, you should make it absolutely clear, well in advance just how much this person deserves the particular honor.

On a related point. We really should stop using "Honorable" as a job title. The taxi man who discovers your purse in his cab, searches throgh it for an address and returns it with all your cash and cards intact acts Honorably. The Minister who organizes a racket to funnel money into his own pocket from an otherwise useful government program dose not.

CD/OJ

Bolt is too young and carefree right now. he needs time to grow and mature. you will expect a person holding an OJ to behave in a certain manner and i dont think Bolt is going to change his personality to fit that. when he gets older and it out of his wild years, then he should be given that honour.

Honours just too easy

Hon. Bolt? The honours of the country should be conferred after long standing sustained achievements. Although Usain has done admirably for the country, and brought a significant amount of positive visibility for the island, I think that renaming the Highway and OJ is a bit excessive! Something smaller, rename the stadium may have been about right and possibly more appropriate. Do we truly understand what the honours of the country mean? or have we already trivialised it?

Anyway, GREAT WORK USAIN! Those are my thoughts.

Just too casusal indeed

I strongly believe the honours are just dashed unto anyone without warning."without warning" this is said because if you were to ask anyone what are the criteria for receiving such an award they would be if and butting, form where is sit i don't see any outlined markers that says you have to actually do these ten things to achieve such an honour. It is particularly because of this, that any time an award of that magnitude is given we will always have controversies over the deserving nature of it. Not to be throwing cold water on the achievements of "Hon. Bolt" but with all the record being set and all are we really seeing the great contribution of this fellow. Will it trickle down to increased tourist arrival like the Cricket World Cup, will it have an increased production in the manufacturing sector of Jamaicans producing bolt dolls, video-games crafts etc. If not, as was said by another critique it would have just been another individual reaching the top of his career within an organization. Take Butch receiving the doctorate from the university in my opinion that was a well bestowed honour as the works show for themselves. So me tink still.!!!!!!!

Zintilicious to the world.!!!!!!

Too Casually

In years gone by the Honours of a country were given to persons who were well deserving. Now it seems its being given to people for all the wrong reasons. The outstanding achievements of Usain Bolt is just the same as someone working their way up in a top company. Why should his Career be rewarded with Diplomacy? This is not what we want to be teaching our young people. Its moves like these that cause students to feel that education is not a way out.We should stop the foolishness. Why wasn't Jodie-Ann Maxwell rewarded for her achievements as Jamaica's first world wide spelling bee champion? We keep telling the country that we all can learn and we all must but rewarding Usain Bolt with such a honor does not shade light to that saying. He should not be given any honours for being successful in his career.

Usain Bolt

As far as I am concerned it is quite fitting for an individual such as Mr. Bolt to be awarded with the nation's fourth highest honors. I believe that the fact that he was able to go the extra miles in putting out great efforts to positively place our little island on the globe, the honors given is about the best thing we can do for him, as a token of our appreciation. We have over the years (tradionally) waited too long for a person to be too old and weak before we honor them. We then painfully watch them die the next day because their poor (feeble)heart could not take that much of the excitement. Mr. Bolt made us feel good and proud as a people and as a nation. What is wrong with us compensating him (with honors) and making him also feel good, while he's young? People just need to go and get a life. We drop the ball on Robert (Bob) Marley by honering him in death. Let's not make the same mistake here. Mr. Bolt is worth every single bit of what the government is recommending for him. I Bob Chambers is recommending a building to be named in his honor as well. I do hope Mr. Golding will consider my recommendation.

Bolt's Honor

I think a lot of Jamaicans are too blinded by the hype of a situation and not to facts! i along with most people well appreciates what bold has done but at the end of the day whatever bolt does benefits him first then the country second, national heroes should be honored has heroes when it is the other way around. yes without reservation the honoring system is way too casual what Bolt did at the end of the day was to run fast , you don't see the Americans making a mockery of there honoring system has we are

Usain Bolt's OJ

This is much too early and the renaming of Highway 2000 in his honour should have been sufficient. He has to control his antics before we take him completely seriously despite his astonishing feats!

Awards too easy...

The National Honours conferred on Mr. Usain Bolt are well-deserved, there are many other less-deserving individuals on whom Jamaica has presented honours for highly dubious reasons.
Mr. Bolt has brought notoriety to himself and Jamaica, and not the type of fame that leaves the decency of the island in question. Presently Jamaica is suffering in the limelight of another individual of notoriety, who a few Jamaicans are 'up in arms' to defend. One can easily see that Jamaica has a shortage of more recent heroes that children can look up to.
The suggestions being made about awards being too easy to come by reflects that there are people who think that one has to be of a certain class, or be supported by such a class, in order to be worthy of National Awards.
