Coast Guard regulations

We have heard in the media that CG regulations have interfered with oil spill efforts in the gulf. Each instance has appeared to be a nit-pick such as PFD labeling or vessel documentation paperwork.

Subchapter T red tape has caused many of us grief in the past and maybe there should be a clause which states "Regulators are prohibited from enforcing provisions contained herein where said enforcement is contrary to common sense."

New moratorium

I can't believe the audacity of Salazar in proposing a new moratorium on deepwater drilling. This coming from a man whose corrupt agency was supposed oversee and regulate offshore drilling. This supposed "pause" could make restarting deepwater drilling economically unfeasible. The equipment necessary to explore, develop and produce will move to other parts of the world, and the U.S. will be forced to buy more foreign oil (perhaps that's why Obama bowed to Saudi King Abdullah when they met).

Do we need to develop alternative energy? Yes. Does the offshore industry need better arms-length regulation and safety measures? Yes. But let's not throw the baby out with the bath water. We need offshore drilling to keep this country going.

PUCKER UP, PIGGY

Salazar is renaming the MMS. Is that lipsticking a pig or what?

Jones Act Is Misunderstood by Most

I have yet to see or hear the media demonstrate an understanding of the Jones Act. Few have even called it by it's correct name. Too simplemindedly, they have targeted it as a cause of the Administration's unresponsiveness to the Horizon leak. We know it is the Administration, not the Jones Act at fault.

Our industry needs to speak out loudly about the validity and rationale behind the Jones Act. We cannot leave it to the clueless in the media or the self-serving in the government to educate the public as to why it exists and why it remains so important to America's maritime industry.

Change inspectors

The Deepwater Horizon system elements that seem to have failed were those inspected by MMS. Salazar has now separated out the MMS inspection function from the rest of the agency. Maybe it should be transferred to the Coast Guard--or the Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum

Deepwater oil drilling

Are safety inspections the answer ?
Deepwater Horizon was fully and regularly inspected by USCG and ABS,and we now see the result

Incident Commander

Adm. Allen: As a retired Navy man I can not think of a more qualified person to oversee this horrible Tragedy in the Gulf. I am surprised I have not seen you with a shovel and plastic bag rasing those oil balls from the beaches. Dwight H. Matlack, USN Retired
