Cheap Wedding Dresses

A right wedding celebration ceremony gown box may possibly be acid cost-free (because the acid will break straight down the material and induce discoloration) and could possibly be also pH neutral

Nuke Power For Merchant Ships

In addition to the objections about security raised by the previous commenter, I would add that sufficient insurance coverage is not available for ANY current nuclear reactors, due to the enormous potential for damage. The American people are on the hook for that should there be a major 'incident'. A close study of the ongoing cvover-up of the BP disaster's destruction is enough to show that we simply do not have any process in place to deal with these major kinds of environmental destruction.

The big picture

Widespread non-military use of mobile nuclear power is a very, very, bad idea. It opens the door for ambitious individuals, organizations, and states to acquire nuclear materials which can then be used in unwelcome ways (think of Osama, McVeigh, N. Korea, etc..). It would be impractical to provide sufficient, reliable armed security for thousands or tens of thousands of vessels worldwide. As it stands now, a severe sting awaits anyone attempting hijack a nuclear powered military vessel, which has kept proliferation from that source to a minimum.

If the motivation for using nuclear propulsion at sea is environmental (pollution, greenhouse gases), then let's step back and put things in perspective: the contribution to global CO2 emissions by the shipping industry amounts to a rounding error.

If the motivation is economic (increasing oil prices), factor in how much will be spent on the heavy security required.

Hydrocarbon fuels provide excellent power density and safety for mobile applications and are hard to beat. Fixed power generation is a different story, and nuclear is a viable option to offset and reduce their use. The motivation for using nuclear on military vessels was to allow for long periods of operation without having to put into port or be refueled at sea.

To be sure, the technical, economic and other issues of nuclear propulsion can no doubt be addressed, but the consequences of a security failure trump everything else. Until we all sit together around the campfire singing Kumbaya, let's keep the nuclear genie in the bottle to the extent we can.

Nuclear propulsion for merchant ship

It can be a good idee if the workmanship is correctly done.
For sure I would not sale on Nuclear ship made in China. I am currently working in shipbuilding in this country.cherit

Nuclear Power

Is there a possibility of reusing the reactors, turbines, etc. of the nuclear submarines currently beeing dismantled? The reactors have plenty of life left as have the turbines and auxiliaries. All that is needed is a hull.

Nuclear Merchant Vessels

Not a good idea anytime. We have a better source in hydrogen fuel cell technology which is less costly over time and of course much less dangerous because of nuke radiation and eventual waste.

NS Savannah

Actually, the Savannah program was very successful. It accomplished all of the goals set for it. The ship was never intended to make money but to open ports to nuclear powered cargo ships staffed by civilian crew, much to the dismay of Admiral Rickover who believed only Naval personnel should operate nuclear ships.

Once the Savannah was turned over to American Export Isbrandtsen Lines to operate, the problem of wage disparity between engineering officers and deck officers was eliminated. Both deck and engine officers received the same wages for their respective ratings.

The Savannah was operated under the subsidiary of A.E. I.L., as F.A.S.T., First Atomic Ship Transport and operated for the next 10 years as a regular cargo ship transporting cargoes to the Mediterranean and the Far East.

In 1970 or 1971 Congress appropriated money to refuel the Savannah and keep it in service until "the next generation of Nuclear ships were to be built". After the operating money was appropriated, Nixon diverted the funds to offset spending on the Viet Nam War and the Savannah was taken out of service.

The Savannah is now in Baltimore, Md., refurbished as a prospective Maritime Museum by MARAD.

The N.S. Savannah was the most memorable of several historic ships that I was lucky enough to sail on in my career.

Savannah

@Michael Novak.

"Think about the Savannah and all the problems they had..."

Savannah was a political demo (see url below):

There are always problems to be worked out. If you know much about how tech develops in the IT industry, than perhaps think of it as similar to alpha or beta software too, far from a "release candidate".

That was then, this is now. Much more is known now about how to do it correctly. The event horizon is here.

economics, micro AND macro

We are facing a situation of diminishing returns in energy markets, because of the inevitable reality of hydrocarbons becoming more scarce. So this practically needs to be done. It will not only lower costs in the long run for shipping companies after initial investment (fuel costs), macro-economically it will be very helpful, as it will reduce how much hydrocarbon energy is spent delivering the hydrocarbons, thereby making more available downstream in energy markets. And companies that are in the business of delivering hydrocarbons will be in business much further into the future, if there is less of the hydrocarbon stuff wasted when delivering it!

Bang!

Accidents happen - Conventional fuel is bad enough but radiation contamination - Yikes!

Not to mention terrorist problems and port restrictions.
Reality check please!

Nuclear Ships

I believe it won't happen. Think about the Savannah and all the problems they had trying to go into port and the paying of the engineers to run it.

Nuclear Ships

This can be done. A US group already hass a conceptual design for a container vessel and LNG ships would be another good choice. They did it before with the Savannah, Otto Hanh and the Russian icebreakers. If enlisted Navy men can oeprate a reactor than properly trained marine engineers is well within reason.

fear mongering

Pffft.

Build 'em with a beacon of some sort, the power block and/or vessel is then tracked by satellite, etc. Only navigate waters & dock in ports well patrolled by cooperating Naval forces.

Next.

Good idea John. Time to fire up the cutting torches.

Mmmmm....I love the smell of oxygen and acetylene in the morning!
