| Posted By: Posted On: Oct 29, 2010 Views: 2756 | Marin in the 60's,70's & 80's, especially Fairfax Fairfax in the 70's was down right magical...as a young woman going to HS and college, working at night to get through school, I never had to worry about walking home at night...people were actively pursuing alternative higher consciousness, in a pro-active community oriented way...folks looked out for each other and all-you-need-is-love was not just a slogan...yes, we were actively pursuing idealism and things weren't perfect, of course, but you could still hitch a ride with someone and not assume you were going to be attacked for doing so...And interracial acceptance was actively practiced...Thank you to everyone who still keeps the Marin dream alive..I look forward to the day when moving back to Marin is a reality. |

| Posted By: Posted On: Dec 11, 2009 Views: 3263 | The Black Oak Saloon Does anyone out there remember the old "Black Oak Saloon" in Larkspur? It was a popular watering hole in the mid 70s to mid 1980s on Magnolia, and I remember going in there a lot with friends from high school during my college years. If you went to Redwood High in the late 1960s or early 70s, you were more than likely to run into quite a few familiar faces from the old Redwood crowd. I remember there were a few girls that I had crushes on in high school who showed up there years later, and it was fun to be able to finally go up to these now grown young women and actually have more than just the awkward kind of conversations that teenagers sometimes have during those somtimes difficult years of adolesence. A raven haired beauty named Lynn Volk was one of the girls I saw there years later, and I was glad to be able to tell Lynn that I always felt she was one of the nicest and most beautiful girls I remembered from the Redwood days. Another time I remember running into Robin Williams there, well before he became the wildly successful comedian. As a matter of fact, Robin and his buddy Eric (I can't remember the fellow's last name) used to hang out at Stinson Beach in the summer of 1974 with a bunch of friends of mine. We'd always run into Robin on the beach after hiking over from Mill Valley on the Dipsea. Years later in 1982, I took my then girlfriend Linda Trieber to a nightclub to see Robin perform, and afterward we went backstage to say hello. I wassurprised when Robin immediately recognized me and yelled out: "HEY, IT'S THE GUY WHO USED TO RUN AND HIKE OUT TO THE BEACH FROM MILL VALLEY! HOW'S IT GOIN?!" Robin was one of several very succesful memebers of the Redwood High class of 1969, a class that also featured future College Football coaching great Pete Carroll, and reknown mathemetician Gunnar Carlsson, who was recently the head of the math department at Stanford. Good memories and a great class! |

| Posted By: Posted On: May 25, 2009 Views: 3950 | Bruce Magowan Hey Bruce, long time! My brother (Gary) and I were two of the kids that joined you in those pickup games at Reed back in the 60's. I remember you, Gunnar and Anders. We live in Petaluma now, but always get nostalgic whenever popping into Tiburon. Gary now teaches at Del Mar, the middle school that we attended after Reed Elementary. |
| Posted By: Posted On: Apr 17, 2009 Views: 3980 | Good Old 50's I remember roller skating at the Marin Skateland on 4th Street. I skated dance competitions with Darleen Chase, skated with friends like Mike Foley, Carol Boehm, Jeep Dillon, and Eddy Henry. I would visit Jeeps Drive In for burgers Courthouse Creamery for lunch, and drive my 1957 Chevy down 4th street weekend nights. Oh the memories. If anyone knows the where abouts of my old skating friends please feel free to e-mail. |
| Posted By: Posted On: Mar 27, 2009 Views: 2933 | Marin in the 1980s By the 1980s, Marin was a totally different place as far as the vibe from the 1950s or 60s. The hot-tub set had moved in, as self-iondulgence and the greed era was in full flower with rampant consumerism, and many of the hideous "McMansions" that now blight our once beautiful hills were thrown up wily-nilly. During the 1980s I lived in western San Francisco, but would come over frequently for hikes on Mt Tam and Pt Reyes, visits to my folks place in Tiburon, and dates with beautiful Marin women. I used to say that despite the changes, Marin was still the best place to be in the area, as once you went through the Waldo Tunnel, your blood pressure would just automatically drop several points! My favorite Marin memories to this day are still the long hikes I used to take on Mt Tam and its environs with my good friends Herman Schwarz and Chris Johnson, as we would tramp on the Dipsea or Matt Davis trails from Milly Valley to Stinson Beach to go bodysurfing and hang out with the beach bunnies. Good times! |
| Posted By: Posted On: Feb 23, 2009 Views: 2933 | Being Single/Divorced in Marin in the 70's & 80's We could not have been in a better place to be single. I was divorced in 1970. There was always a place to go to be with people and meet new friends. Some of my favorites were: Unitarian Singles...met lifelong friends, had so much love and support, parties, and seminars. Community Congregational Church CCC was another supportive place. Zacks, Holiday Inn, The Velvet Turtle, Happy Hours, Dancing, and just hanging out. Every kind of growth group you can imagine. Free classes at College of Marin Towns had small time atmosphere and not so much traffic. Those were the days. :) |
| Posted By: Posted On: Feb 13, 2009 Views: 2938 | Fairfax and it's friendly reputation I guess I'm prejudiced, but I think Fairfax is one of the few places left in Marin that still has that "old time flavor" of what a small town in this county used to have. The folks here are wonderful, quirky, artsy, outdoorsy, and usually pretty liberal politically. It's a great town for families, old folks, young adults, and even teens. You get to know your neighbors, and people love to converse and just take the time to enjoy the nice, quiet times. If you like music or mountain biking, this is the best place to be in Marin! I love walking from the hill where we live above town to downtown for a visit to the "Klatch" or the "Fair-fix" or the "Scoop." My daughter Molly (who is now almost four), loves Peri Park. The Halloween parade is a big hoot, and the summer Farmer's Market is always fun to visit. My mind always go back to the 1950s and 60s and early 70s in Tiburon when I walk around town, because the vibe is similar in many ways. How lucky we are! |

| Posted By: Posted On: Jan 30, 2009 Views: 2565 | memories Just found this site...Re: CB's post 1-1-07, corn dog place was King Henry's Drive-In. Always my first stop when I'd been away in the 70's.The Best corn dogs. Sad when it was flattened and left an empty lot...Living on Scenic Rd and the music drifting down the hill from the valley. The Humane Society following my dog home from San Anselmo market to give me a warning he was close to Center Blvd. I can't remember the name of the hotel NB 101 at Lucas Valley Rd., There were cabins and a pond with ducks. Ray Hill of Novato told me it used to be a stage and overnite stop before the GG Bridge was built. He had many stories to tell. He felt the worst thing to happen to Marin was the GG Bridge being built.. Now I know how how felt..But memories are good and this site brought them back. Thank you |
