"Monarch, subjects protest in court over rape case From Tunji Omofoye, Osogbo THERE was a twist in the alleged rape of a former National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Miss Helen Okpara, by an Osun traditional ruler, Oba Adebukola Alli, the Alowa of Ilowa in Obokun Local Council Area, as the state government was accused of bias and plot to nail the embattled monarch. The drama yesterday at the resumed hearing of the case involved some members of the monarch's community and pupils who stormed the premises of Osun State High Court, protesting alleged prejudice towards him by the state authorities. The alleged involvement of the state government in the celebrated rape case came to the public hearing for the first time yesterday since the trial began over six months ago. Moments after the court had adjourned, a drama ensued as students in uniform from Ifelodun Grammar School, Ilowa, the accused monarch's domain, advanced to the front of the court with placards bearing different inscriptions in defence of the accused. Some of the inscriptions on the placards read: "This is war against Ilowa people", "Stop the blackmail, our oba is a decent oba", "Your game-plan has failed". Other indigenes from Ilowa community were also sighted in the court premises. The protesters were shouting on top of their voices, accusing the state government of bias and plot to nail Oba Alli. One of the protesters suspected to be Oba Alli's son thundered, "The corper was their teacher and everything that affects the Oba affects the whole community. This is intimidation, the government has a hand in the trial and that is the reason for the intimidation". Ostensibly infuriated by the protesters' conduct, an unidentified man advanced towards them and seized some placards, thereby dispersing the school children whom he said, were supposed to be in school learning. He noted that their action was tantamount to child abuse and the government might take it up against the school, which released its pupils for such gathering. Meanwhile, a counsel from the state Ministry of Justice, Mr. Dapo Adeniyi, opposed the application of no-case submission by the monarch. He told the court that Alli is facing a four-count charge of rape, kidnapping, indecent assault and defamation of the former NYSC member. Adeniyi, who informed the court that they had filed a written address dated April 30, 2012, noted that the victim had said she was forcefully and illegally penetrated without her consent and she gave a vivid account of how the accused bruised her private part and raped her.
