Rust, was starting to show within the 1st yr of ownership. and by the 3rd yr. it was costing me almost a $1,000 everytime I headed for the shop... parts were sky high, and durability of brakes and rotors was terrible... the timeing belt would not last more than 16 to 18000 miles... there was no compreshion valve release... and by the 4th year, I felt like Fred Flintstone, pedaling my car down the street. the floor board was gone... when the car ran, it was a screamer... it was totally awsome... but one cough, it would become a really big piece of **** in a New York heart beat... |

What once was considered to be a disadvantage turned out to be the reason why those cars now still can be driven (and maintained)unlike many other cars of that particular period. For the last 3 years I have driven an Beta coupé from 1977 every single day and it has never let me down. Since I want to avoid winter, snow and salt on the street, 2005/2006 will be the rest for the car... |

| Posted By: Bill Westerbeek Posted On: Apr 7, 2004 Views: 4295 | The Fuvia was the last real Lancia Having been lucky enough to own a Lancia Beta HPE (for 9 years) as well as 3 Lancia Fulvias (a 2C Sedan, Zagato and a 1970 model 1.3 Coupe for 20 years) I feel able to pass comment on this subject. The HPE was a great and practical car thanks to the excelent mechanic that kept it on the road - lots of the Fiat bits kept failing suddenly. The Fulvia Coupe is not as practical (size) but handles even better than the HPE (which was impressive) and has been totally reliable and not dependent on a good mechanic. I know that Fiats can be relible as I owned a 1500 MkIII and a 128 (which was also handled like it ran on rails). The Fulvia series shares the imaginative mechanical design with its Lancia bretheren that the Beta series didn't. |

Having owned a Lancia Beta myself for 10 years, and driven many Fiats during my years in Italy, I can honestly say that it is a Lancia all the way. Fiats in comparison were only cheap little economic runabouts, nothing more. Any 124 owner can tell you that there is nothing sporty about an actual 124, unless it is almost totally modified. Even a sloppy Mazda Capella or a Hyunday Excell can feel sporty when fully modified. Does that mean that the Integrale is not a Lancia either? No Fiat has such records. Although Fiat owned they were still built with Lancia instincts. Just a little trivia for all, I overtook a Peugeot 306 GTI6 at 110 kph on Devils Elbow in Adelaide South Australia 3 years ago in my Beta 2lt during a race to Tallem Bend. The Pirelli p6's screeched like mad but the Peugeot was in my rear vision mirror for a while until I got passed on the straights due to it's greater top speed. |

The geometry of the Beta and the suspension set-up is totally Lancia style. The engine yes does originate from FIAT but the "guts" and the "grunt" is all Lancia. And not to mention the modifications that can be done to this engine, a Beta can really be a worthy sports and performance machine. |
