the kiwi

With NZ home grown products more expensive at home than in London ( cheese, milk, apples ) it is a sure sign that the currency is way overvalued against the Euro.

Down and more down.

NZ $

The NZ dollar is rightly valued right now and will stay this way for the next 2 or 3 years, as predicted by the central bank of new zealand.
If you look at the exchange rate with the euro, it is the same as 1999: around .50 euros for 1 $NZ.
You have to stop comparing the kiwi dollar with the US dollar. This last currency is not the yardstick it was before. The rise of the NZ$ in US$ is merely a consequence of the fall of the US$ against all currencies, which is a lasting trend.
If you look at the euro/NZ$ parity, it is quite flat since 1999, with only a temporary bump in 2005.
Plus the NZ is undergoing a "dutch disease" effect of the rising dairy and meat prices, fueling inflation, and the NZ central bank will keep high interest rates for the year coming for that very reason (see the last monetary policy report). There is no reason for the NZ$ to fall, the effect on exports will be compensated by the rising dairy and meat prices, and the strong NZ$ will prevent rising inflation of imported energy.
As the Big Mac index shows, the NZ $ is not overvalued (or less so than the euro, 22% overvalued according to the latest Big mac issue).

NZ Dollar devaluation?

If there is going to be trouble in the credit market then NZ will be the hardest hit. The high dollar is already taking its toll on exporters. The socialist goverment is very keen to see the NZ dollar lower and give it a push downwards. If the market does not do it, the Minister of Finance Mr. Cullen will instruct his pupet at the reserve bank to devalue. Something Mr Cullen always wanted to do....

usd/zar

sorry but I think that the overall trend is for a lower dollar through the end of the year and then some, therefore based on the fundumentals of the SO ecomomy, gold, china investmrnt in banking. and the interest rate differentials I am bullish in the ZAR through the end of the year, and possibly then some depending on the dollar

Overvalued Kiwi

You are correct, the Economist got it wrong - with Peak Oil on everyone's lips I'm expecting that the carry trade must at some point be affected as Japan and Switzerland raise interest rates to combat oil induced inflation.

Overvalued Kiwi

The economist made a mistake with their 73% 0vervalued remark - they have now changed it on their website to 5% overvalued (too late for most print editions). Heres a link to how they managed to muck it up:

Having said that I'm short (but not by 73%, and I'm a NZer)

Value of the NZ dollar

Jul 6, 2007

The Economist's annual Big Mac index rates the Kiwi dollar as the most overvalued currency in the world.

The index tests the theory that taking into account exchange rates, the same product should cost the same around the world.

Comparing the price of a Big Mac burger, The Economist found the Kiwi dollar is 73% overvalued - 20% above the second most overvalued currency, the Swiss franc. The Chinese yuan is 58% undervalued, the lowest ranked currency in the survey.

RBNZ intervention

The central bank doesn't have enough money to stop a determined effort to spike the NZ$ - but how long the $ stays at these artifically elevated levels is anyone's guess AND risk. Oil prices are on a permanent upward trend and this will dramatically affect the NZ economy, especially if as predicted, within 5 years depletion coupled with increasing domestic demand in oil producing countries means up to 50 % of the world's oil is off the market. In this scenario NZ becomes a basket case.

NZ intervention

There has been a few interventions on the rise of the NZ$ against US$ by the NZ Central Bank. Does the Central Bank has deep enough pockets to stem the rising tide?
